New BajaRack being made for my FJ

I would like to add one thing here.
I did not intend on anyone thinking that a newer design of the MG (Maggiolina tent style) racks would have an immediate design change to them.
I am sure if that is going to happen the folk's at BajaRacks will let you know.

I will try and get a picture of my modified latch later, and update the thread here with it.

Quite a few at work today have been eyeballing it, people I do not know by name.
They probably noticed the difference today since it is so much lower.

What an awesome way to camp/explore with that mounted to an FJ. Now I'm thinkin about if one could be mounted to a tonneau cover. The cost of the good ones is close to that of an ARE Shell for my Tacoma with opening side windows which would also do what I'd like. I just don't care for having a shell. Nice work!

Thanks ET.
I have played in my mind different scenarios if I had a Tacoma instead of the FJ.

I have seen roof top tents mounted to a CanBak shell before.

I do not see why a cover would not work with a setup like this.

Here is one right on a shell.

And Sierra Expeditions on a CanBak, very sharp.

Put the awning on today, just finished up.
First I had to remove the aft bracket, not something easy to do with the tent on already.
Toyota had the aft bracket back one set of bars to far, and this was interfering with the mount being able to come out all the way and clear the side of the fiberglass shell on the tent and match up with the other two awning brackets.

Thought I was going to have to loosen the mount for the tent and jack it up some, but I was able to twist the bracket mount sideways and pop both of them out once I removed the lower part of the brackets.
Once out, I moved them forward one position.
Now the vertical upright on the mount clears the tent much better.

I did not get the awning positioned though as well as I would have liked.
I wanted it centered with the tent, but once the awning track bolts are through the awning brackets, they do not slide at all in the two tracks on the rear of the awning.
To much pressure, even with the bolts loose.
I will live with it for now, and maybe if I have someone to help me in the future, I can get it centered.
I did this by myself, and it is royal PITA to jockey the awning in your arms/hands and get all six bolts through the awning brackets.

Also you can see in the first picture how the tech at Toyota had to cut down the tents clasp so it would clear the horizontal bar there that it was hitting before as seen in a picture in this thread at the beginning.

That spooge you see between the stainless trim and the fiberglass shell of the tent is from the old growth fir tree I park under.
It will come off with brush and soap once I start hand washing the rig before to long.

Now all the hard part is out of the way.
Just need to better organize my gear later with new boxes and get ready for camping season 2010!

Makes me wish I had an FJ. So clean. Ugh, if I didn't have so much invested in my Taco.

Have you used the tent in high wind conditions? If so, what was it like? Did you get a lot of movement up so high and with the vehicle suspension allowing any rocking motion?

It was pretty windy the year before last and had some rain, it never rocked me.
This is one of the reasons I went for this style of tent as they are known to work very well with severe weather.

And the low ceiling height inside also keeps it warmer with less to heat up.
I was very warm on a few chilly nights in it with just the flannel sheets and down comforter.

Corey,

The new Baja Rack with your old set up (RTT and awning) turned out great!
Your rig now has a nice lower profile going on. I'll keep my eyes peeled around these parts for a closer look. Congrats!

Thanks.
It sure does look different with it lower.
I have to keep looking out the window at it :D

Was so use to seeing it up high for two years.
This is so much better.

I am hoping to get out Memorial Day weekend up to Greenwater somewhere.
That is if I can get gear reorganized by then and packed.
If not by then, then shortly after.

So many different places to camp for free up there.
This year I will be using the Droid to map the spots I go to so I can catalog them them for future reference.

Looking forward to seeing your new setup too.

Looks much better. It's funny, but a few weeks ago, I received the Bajarack for my FJC and ended up buying the same step ladder to reach it. On a side note, what is that brand of Root beer that you recommended?

I have a 6' ladder too that I use to wash the top of the tent when I wash the rig, but I may be able to get by now with the 4' one since the tent is much lower.

The only rootbeer or pop for that matter that I will drink is Henry Weinhard's.
My brother had it for the first time last summer (almost 66) during my camping trip, and he thought it was very good.
