New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

It is a D4a that is less useful than a D4. Smaller cargo area. Side door instead of tailgate. Narrower cargo opening. Really, the only plus is the larger tires. Otherwise, it is just a newer Discovery. If it did not have a Defender badge, that is what everyone would think.

If you are one of those people that thinks a D4 is great off road, you are lacking in experience.

You just injected at least fifty fresh pages of life into this thread.

Amen.

Discussion of Land Rover's legendary reliability showed the enthusiast community's spectacular capacity for intellectual freedom--rivaled only by the likes of, I'd say, the Flat Earth Society.

There's lies, damned lies, but then there's Land Rover Reliability statistics.

I beg to differ- I have no doubt that Rubicon owners have a much higher use rate of their 4x4 systems than LR. No doubt, there are people who bling out the Jeeps etc... but it doesn't take much scrolling on any Jeep forum or a visit to any trail system to understand that Jeep Wrangler owners use their Jeeps as 4x4s.

Some Jeep owners do. Most don't. My neighbor has a Rubicon and has never been off-pavement. Coworker has a 2" lift and 35"s and won't even join me to drive down some green trails. I'd go on but it doesn't matter.

Some Rover owners go off road. Most don't.

Some Cummins RAM owners tow. Most don't.

Some Porsche owners track their cars. Most don't.

We use our trucks... whether they're Jeep, Toyota, or Rover. Why the hate? Same team!

It's one of the things that is just so completely true about them here as well- roaming the Starbucks. About the most you'll see one using 4x4 is when it snows and the families are headed to Vail. I can honestly say I've only seen 1 LR on the trail my 4 years roaming the backwoods of Colorado. It was a Disco 2 on 35s and while I realize what I'm opening myself up for around here I will admit that at the time it came driving up I was stuck in our Grand Cherokee and he pulled me out! :)
I saw two other D5s on the trails above Crested Butte in the same day in 2018. Saw an LR4 and a FFRR in the outback of Wyoming the day of the Eclipse in 2017, the week I got my D5. I saw an early 90s RR, no mods other than MT's at the old South Colony Lakes trailhead before they closed the road. I see LR3 and 4's all the time around Pikes Peak.

We're out there, but there are easily 10x more Jeeps and Toyota's on the trails, because there have been more than 10x of each made.

LOL. Running Engineers Pass some lady in a 4 person atv yelled " I wouldn't bring my LR4 up here! ". The only vehicles we saw were Jeeps, Yotas and Scouts.
Funny, was at Schofield Pass, which was blocked by a massive snow slide that was passable with ATVs and some balls, and some dude stopped me and said, "That's a Land Rover - should have no problem!"

Big time engineering oops there.

I run 19.5'' and 20'' wheels to tow and haul with F+ rated tires, not to overland in an suv.

Where have I read stories like this before?

Ten miles from the dealer lot, new Defender throws error code, restricts performance. Dealer twice fails at remedy, refuses replacement. Guy burns his arm fixing a plastic clip melted by the motor (sounds like a design problem). Reattaches hose, apparently fixing the problem (not rocket surgery, but still, this is a brand-new truck), which the dealer couldn't figure out. Also notices hood latch already coming loose.

This is the kind of crap that I don't want to deal with and worry about while remote touring. At least when remote touring one can skip the bother of the useless dealer, which (luckily) wouldn't be unavailable.

Gonna be honest the worst part of this is that the dealer couldn’t find it. The hood latch I’m not sure on it’s probably the same latch other Land Rovers use so it might be a bad batch sucks but we might see a recall on it and maybe the GPF. Frankly the dealer should have seen both of these issues before the car was even delivered.

This just seems to me like another guy who is being nit-picky because he paid a lot of money for this- does he not know that this Defender drove across Namibia!?! ;)

Seems like a brake downsizing kit rally car style would be a no brainer. LR should just offer it with a software re-flash and be done with it. Has any tried it with rally wheels designed to fit over large brakes yet?

Why would the company that is building the #BEST4X4BYFAR choose the build it with 19" rims standard knowing that there are very few off-road tire selections? Or make it where the 18" rims can only come with 1 engine choice?.....Is it possible that their priorities are somewhere else?

Just curious? :)

The 18” wheels come on multiple engines the problem is LRNA.
