Graham, Thanks for the compliment. I'd ditch that radiator- they ain't that high new. It'd suck to hurt that fresh engine if the radiator pops soon after you get it going. I had a 24v that I sold right after I bought my F-350. I had a 53 that busted. It sucked so bad! Of course I wash cramming 600 hp out of it too. I never worried about my drive shaft- and I'm two piece in my current truck as well. I'd also put in that diamond eye- or even a Summit Racing exhaust. Anything big and cheap will do. I've had some expensive exhaust systems and other than the sheen of stainless I never thought they were that great. Gimme cheap on the exhaust- and quiet. Your definitely gonna be rockin a new truck when you get done. Definitely something to be proud of. I'm glad your keepin us posted- love the pics!! Good luck, carry on!!

The transmission is getting worked over big time: new single plate clutch, all new syncros (3 and 4 were absolutely gone in my tranny), fixed 5th gear nut, re-sealed, and a fresh coat of paint.

Hey Graham, I don't see any mention of an updated mainshaft in your trans build plans. You should absolutely do this as part of any Dodge NV4500 rebuild.

I love how your truck got the "Cali lean" without ever leaving Co!

Great truck! You're skilled fabricator. Really interesting following.

It will be exciting to see have the new engine turns out. Keep up the good work!

Well... now it's almost 5am. I don't even remember when I started reading this, at page 1.

Incredible work... wish I had picked up welding a long time ago. Solar, automation, software development, check. Building things out of anything tougher than wood? Not so much.

Also another Colorado neighbor (Denver now, desperately trying to move back up to Fort Collins) so hopefully I'll run in to you on the trails when it warms up and you get her operational again. This whole camper DIY camper thing has completely blown my mind.

...Little Update...

Howdy gang! Thanks to everybody for stopping by and commenting, Redthies, I'll need to let him know about the updated main shaft. I've read very little about that here and there, but if it's apart, might as well do it.

Let's see, the block is still in machining, my p-pump has been sent for rebuild, and I'm slowly gathering parts for when it goes back together. I got a new radiator from 1-800 Radiator (pretty handy deliver-to-your-door service!), and as of yesterday I have finished rebuilding the entire power steering and vacuum system: all new lines, new pump and reservoir, new power steering box, resealed vacuum pump (that was actually in very good shape), and put the whole assembly back together.

I also spent some quality time degreasing and power washing the engine bay, gosh it's nice to be able to see that front crossmember again, it had like 1/2" of gunk piled onto it.

Even the A/C compressor cleaned up real nicely!

So the only things left to do on my end are paint the frame and engine bay, there's some rust here and there, and work on an exhaust setup. I degreased and painted my intercooler cold pipe and intake horn, and I have some new intercooler boots and spring clamps on the way. Now I just have to wait...

The Surgury Was a Success!

Hello ExPo!

I'm very pleased to report, after quite a long anxious wait, the old rig is alive once again.:wings: Here's some specs:

-Swapped the 53 block for a 14mm main industrial block
-Bored .020 over
-Cummins Marine big bowl pistons and marine 370 hp injectors
-ARP 425 Headstuds
-Aurora 3000 on an ATS manifold
-Rebuilt P-Pump, 16* timing advance, stock delivery valves
-new lift pump, new water pump, any rubber lines were replaced, new radiator, flushed intercooler, flushed heater core backwards (to get rid of anymore stop leak), and a few more odds and ends.
-4" Diamond Eye with a muffler (ordered from Summit with a Diamond Eye tip to bring back the sweet turndown that I love very much!)

We reused the rods, crank and cam from the old engine. They all polished up really well at the machine shop.

TRANS:
-Full rebuild kit with new bearings and syncros, updated main shaft, fixed fifth gear, new seals
-500 hp Southbend single plate

The transfer case also got a rebuild kit with a new chain and bearings, and new seals since it was leaking a gallon a month out the rear seal.

We capped it off with the famous "BHAF", affectionately known as the big honkin' air filter.

Here's some pics, then we'll get on with the "initial drive" report.

If you can believe it, we crammed that motor back in the truck with the harmonic balancer, valve covers and fuel lines all installed, in LESS THAN 40 minutes. Not bad for my first R&R, if I may say so... In fact everything went back together pretty drama free, and, curiously, we must have lined the hood up pretty well because it shuts much easier now than it used to.

Initial report: WOW. This thing doesn't behave like it's almost 20 years old anymore. That Aurora 3000 is just an insane turbo. I wish like heck I could just bury my foot in this truck and see what it can do, but I'm trying to resist so I can break it in properly. That said, in fourth gear at about 40 mph, if I put my foot down, it'll snap from 9 psi to 35 psi in about 1 second flat. I mean I didn't know it was possible to get this much mass moving THIS fast. Wow this will be fun.

Interestingly, it smokes very little. In fact I'd say it smokes less than it did when I took the engine out. The marine pistons have a nice deep bowl that permits a lot of air in the cylinder, in theory, creating a very clean burn. I like it! Every 12 valve I see smokes like a freight train, and they don't have to be turned up to do that...

I will say, however, that a 500 hp clutch will take some getting used to. Obviously, in order to hold that kind of power, it's going to be a very chattery clutch. I would say, at least until I get it properly broken in, that long gone are the days of starting in 2nd gear. Any remote form of clutch slip just tries to knock my molars out of my head.

So the big stinky flatbed lives to ride again! I think maybe it will be time for a dyno run after my awesome 1500 mile initial oil change and headstud re-torque. THEN I can put some real specs up :)

Take care folks!

Graham

Neat truck!

Your situation was kind of like mine..

I bought a 12v and assumed it was good to go. I was unaware the head gasket was already failing, and hooking my toyhauler to it was the straw that broke the camels back.
The damaged head gasket pressurized the oil gallery starving the main bearings of oil.. It continued to run fine all the way from Colorado back to Iowa but my machinist said he's surprised I didn't spin a main bearing.. Now that's a engine! lol

Anyway.. Mines rebuilt to.. But I had to install it as a short block in the E350..

And in hind sight, I should have just bought a cummins truck..

Thats a ridiculously shiny drivetrain...i'm impressed, very nice refresh on it all. Hope it all works fantastic. I've been looking around for a 12v myself and this is inspiring to see how nice yours came out. Congrats!

Very nice truck. Glad you got the motor back in and running. I know I hate when my truck is down. My truck has 283,000 and I am kind of wondering about it. I want to have the motor rebuilt so I don't have to worry about it, but it is hard to save of the money when it is running good now. I need to go through the steering and suspension like you have. Enjoy the new power, looking forward to what is next for it.
