just bought my first 97 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS.4x4 3.0 A/T Wanna throw a little larger tire underneath . Im not new to 4x4s I have had many different models .This i bought for my gal.And make it my comfortable trail rig.As I have a jeep for the tuff stuff.I was thinking body lift, perhaps 2 inch . I already have several 3 in kits . and i have a bandsaw i could easily cut down my pucks to 2 in. what would be the largest tire i could use if i did this . and what are the issues i would run into. i can make radiator mounts and plan to go full electric fan set ups . as I also have a couple fan setups already. any input is appreciated. thanks.

Sorry, as much as I know about Montero's, I know very little about the sports.

32's were the largest I could run on my 97 3 liter sport with the truck maintaining good drivability. the 3 liter is underpowered unfortunately. added a single leaf from a jeep pack and cranked the front torsion bars, no need for a body lift.

If you haven't already done so, just look through the Montero Sport picture thread at the beginning of this section. You'll see plenty of folks who have lifted them and can easily PM another member to ask questions.

AFAIK, the "generation" thing is for the Montero, not for the Sport.

The 97-99 Montero sports had leafs, from 2000-2004 they had rear coils. Those are the only two generations that exist in North America.

Differences vary from the four wheel drive system, transmissions, suspension, options, and the body style design. Same engines offered though.

Body lifts? Yes you will need one if you go 33 inches or over. I'm at 33 inch tires right now and I rub just taking sharper corners. As others have mentioned monterosportonline.com is helpful, and also where I am a member.

Ha, yep got to love those dealerships. And no offense taken no worries, I didn't mean to harp on mechanics either. I was even a 'lube' mechanic myself at Tires Plus for a little over a year. Knew a lot, but I stuck to the stuff I was trained for. Never over extended myself and always tried to do the best work possible. I just hate the way some shops put as much space as conceivably possible between customers and mechanics. Like I also said I just want to actually talk to the mechanic, I've worked with some that just don't give a hoot. Then again I've also worked with some and have observed that most do excellent jobs and I really appreciate them staying in a hot sweaty garage all day to work on my nit picky vehicle.

I always hate being the guy that says, only fix that and don't fix the other part that is 100% related but not broken, but should be replaced. (example water pump when doing timing belt). So I try not to. I say this it what I THINK and strongly believe is wrong, but if you find it's not, I trust what you say, and believe you will fix the correct part.

In my experience? Two bad shops, one a bad shop OWNER, the other a bad shop mechanic AND owner (same person). The other? Getting taken for at the dealership by paying to find out nothing is actually wrong when I observe for myself that there clearly is a problem but it is obviously difficult to replicate.

Like I said, I don't mean anything bad on mechanics, I love working on vehicles, but I'm glad and appreciate the career choice others make to dedicate their time to helping those of us less skilled and who have less knowledge with our vehicles.
