New rig!

So the wifes car is sold and the hunt for a surf-mobile is on!!

The initial idea was to buy and fix up a Westfalia, and if we find a killer deal that may still be an option. However since this is going to be my DD I'm really not wanting to spend a ton of time and money getting something to a "reliable" status.

Right now we're looking at a Astro with a goal of what T.Low has done. Like T.Low I do not want to drive a full size SMB and we do not need that big of space and interior options. A pop top and cargo room is all we need.

Can anyone else recommend another good platform to build on? I would like to keep the purchase price of the vehicle around $5k so I can build from there.

This Astro has been at Boulder Off Road for atleast 2.5 yrs now, if not longer. Low ball them, then take it to Derek @ coloradocampervan to pop the existing top for you, and you still have $ left over to mod your interior.:victory:

I'm going to an auction tomorrow in Seattle. Among the vehicles is a non running '00 Astro Cargo AWD. Sooo tempting. Throw in a V8, CraigsList some axles and Tcase, Overlandvans lift kit. :smiley_drive:

Maybe check the auctions in your area. There is going to be 1/2 dozen Astros and (25) 1 ton Ford vans at this auction. Hmm. Ujoint 4x4 conversion, a Colorado Derek pop top.
