New Sniper Record

That sucks that he got shot and broke his arms shortly after!

I'd say his rifle is well named "Accuracy International".

Wow- there got to be a bit of luck there also. Any idea what he was shooting? This wasn't a .50 was it?

From what I could find, it was a .338 Lapua Magnum. 50 Cal shot would have been kept quite since it violates Geneva Conventions.

I do not believe in luck back to back. the only lucky part was the perfect weather. At that distance even a slight wind or heat would give a fair bit of illusion/mirage . mathematically he has got to be a genius. putting together numbers even on a perfect day would be pretty tough. lots of factors there. think of how hard it is to take an 800 yard shot with a 300 mag.... very impressive

I believe you're correct on the .338. However, I've seen plenty of photos and videos of .50 caliber Barretts, etc. being employed over there. How does it violate the Geneva Convention?

I'm sure that those .50's are only used against hard targets and not personnel.

I looked it up because I couldn't recall the exact distance, but I knew that Carlos Hathcock's record was close to this. According to wiki:
"In 1967 Hathcock set the record for the 20th century's longest combat kill with a Browning M2 machine gun mounting a telescopic sight. The distance was 2,286 meters (2,500 yd / 1.420 mi). Hathcock was one of several individuals to utilize the Browning M2 machine gun in the sniping role. This success led to the adoption of the .50 BMG cartridge as a viable sniper round. Sniper rifles have since been designed around and chambered in this caliber."

I would think luck DOES have something to do with it, but he hit 2 guys in a very small time interval. So, he probably has more than luck on his side. lol

The truly amazing shot wasn't the two muj. It was the third shot he took, hitting the machine gun. The machine gun is a LOT smaller than one of the muj.....

Kudos to the squaddy. Exceptional shooting, indeed.

Common misconception. There is nothing in the laws of war about shooting enemies with a .50 cal. This whole concept is just one of those military legends. And, as I learned, don't shoot at the enemy: shoot at the web gear on his chest (it's OK to destroy enemy equipment).

The closest proscription is shooting them with something designed to cause unnecessary suffering (necessary suffering being undefined): The reason the .50 is used isn't for causing unnecessary suffering, it's to reach that far.

Just as the M118LR 7.62x51 sniper ammo has a hollow-point bullet. Not to expand or hurt more (anyway, if the shooter does his job it won't hurt at all), the hollow point is there for the accuracy of the bullet shot.

The previous record was also with a .50BMG, a MacMillan Tac-50 by a Canadian in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (Cpl Rob Furlong), also in Afghanistan in 2002, of 2430 meters. He's now a cop in (I believe) Winnipeg so be careful up there!

like was already said, they would use it for "equipment" only... but I retract what I said, it appears that has always been myth anyway. I've seen the videos you're talking about as well. Guess I've been lied to for the past 11 years about that being a hush-hush practice.
