New Snug Top Shell for Tacomas

Looks like Snug Top has come out with a new style of shell called the Outdoorsman. It's a fiberglass shell that replaces the tailgate with two doors, ambulance style:

Here's an image that I found on Tacoma World from SEMA:

In one of those small world moments, I found out last night that the above truck is for sale at my local Toyota dealership, just over $35k for everything but the bikes:

So I managed to drag my butt out of bed at 0900 this morning for a field trip. Here's what I found out about the truck:

List of additions to the truck. They list the shell as an "Outdoorsman" but refer to it on their facebook page as the "Outback"

Looks like it has a built in backup camera:

Stout hinges, no latch on the driver side door. It has to be closed first and is held closed by the passenger door. Gas struts open the doors almost 180° but a limit strap could be made to stop them wherever you want:

It was difficult to capture in the pictures, but there's a cross piece that connects the bottom outboard corners underneath the doors. It keeps the doors from spreading apart and provides a place to mount the lower latch catch and weather stripping.

The shell attaches to the tiedown tracks on the bedside:

It follows the contours of the truck pretty closely. There was a little bit of stickout in the back corners that I wasn't able to capture on camera. It sits a little bit proud of the cab:

The gap between the back of the cab and forward end of the shell isn't even, it increases slightly as you go up:

Looking around Snug Top's website I see nothing about the Outback model. According to their facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/Snugtop, this is a new model of shell that is currently available for Tacomas with the long bed length (Xtra cabs and DCLB). I'd imagine that they'll be making a version for the DCSB but I do not know and have not seen anything. There is some discussion going on in the Tacoma World forum regarding beefing up the doors enough to mount a spare tire or fuel cans: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/302525-sema-tacaomas-5.html

I'm really liking the look of this shell and think I'd be willing to give up the tailgate, especially if you could modify it to mount fuel or a spare tire.

I've always liked these types of rear doors. The only time they royally suck is when you want to carry something long. You have to strap the doors as closed as possible. Sometimes you just want to lift up the back glass and slide some 2x4's in there and drive across town. It's a bit more of a hassle with ambulance doors. As far as the front of the shell not matching the cab; has that been a problem on other shells between the AC and DC tacomas? Is the profile different on the backs of the cabs on the two or was this just an 'oops'? Either way, I'm not a pickup shell kind of guy but I always like to see new cool products and what people do with them!

This.

If you could incorporate a strong enough door for "swing out" accessories, that would be an awesome shell. Some may make argue "why not just use a swing out on the bumper." That is fine, but you have the options. Very cool. It would make it easier to get into the back as well, not having to lean over the tail gate.

Cool stuff.

Unfortunately, this wouldn't fit first gen's correct? If they made a short box version I mean...bed dimensions are different b/w gen's right? I have an ARE...wonder if anyone has ever made a custom door setup for what they have...?

Bed is way different between the 1st and 2nd gens. 2nd Gens are wide! About the same width as 1st Gen tundras to my eye (not Double Cab tundras...those are wider)

Thanks for sharing! I love the look of the barn doors. I'm not sure they would be more functional, though. Too bad they only have these for the long beds.

If this comes out for the DCSB I think I just solved my bed cover/load security decision. That looks pretty awesome! Definitely need to solve the spare mounted on door thing...maybe just a second swimg arm off a rear bumper.

Thanks for posting! Nice looking truck and cap! I've had 2 Tacomas with 2 different style doors on ARE caps. One had the same style doors as the above Tacoma. My current ARE cap has the conventional rear window and tailgate configuration, this I find to be more versatile, both for using to transport extra long items and when sleeping inside. I like having the tailgate to sit on and place gear on when I am in the camp-mode. When I sleep in the bed of the truck, I can shut the tailgate and leave the window partially or completely open.

ARE has made a shell with a single rear door that is contained inside a one-piece liftgate for several years. Like this one, they are quite expensive.

The only thing I dislike about these (besides the cost) is the necessity of getting rid of the tailgate. Tailgates are really handy, in fact, I wish my 4runner had a tailgate instead of a liftgate.

The gap increasing towards the top of cab is probably by design, given the incredible lack of rigidity in the Toyota frames. My 04 has dents in the back of the cab from the box hitting, and the newer frames, are, IMHO, of even poorer design.

I do concur that for $35K, this truck is a deal.

I think what appeals the most to me about this style vs the ARE is that it comes straight down at the back. My current Leer has a slope to it that is just enough to be annoying when trying to sleep on my sleeping platform. It's also a nuisance when trying to put bikes in the back. I think I could get by without a tailgate, especially if I were to mount a small fold down table on the door.

$990.00 MSRP for that fugly-***** grille. :Wow1:

That grill actually MSRPs for closer to 1200 :Wow1:

This is what I was thinking about the gap myself. It's not noticeable unless you stand right there looking at it, but I figured I'd mention it because it is eye catching once you do see it. I'm currently in the market for a DCSB and gave this one some thought. I figured I'd be able to sell off all the stuff I don't like (grille, wheels, front bumper) and use that money for stuff that I do like. The big strikes for me are that it's a black truck and a long bed. I want to be able to fit into my garage and I can't stand how crappy looking my current black truck gets if I don't wash it all the time.

Did the salesman actually indicate that the truck was for sale at $35K? I wouldn't personally buy another Tacoma DCLB TRD as it doesn't fit my needs, however the price does appear to be great if it is correct.

Cheers

I just got off the phone with the dealership and it looks like we've found a booboo. It's not quite the screaming deal as shown. The website currently lists the truck as $35,050. I spoke with their sales guy Brian and asked about the website listing and the sheet of accessories listed on the window of the truck which is shown in my original post. The sheet of accessories is not currently mentioned nor shown on the web listing. He said there appeared to be an error on the web listing because the accessories sheet is supposed to be a part of the listing. We'll see how long it takes for the web listing to be corrected, but it appears that the $17,211.82 total on the accessory sheet needs to be added to the $35,050 price, for an actual total of $52,261.82. I've had good experiences with the service department at this dealership and really hope this is an honest mistake and not a bait-and-switch.
