New tires!

I finally got my 235/85r16 tires. I went with Yoko Geolander ATs to replace my BFG 31x10.5r15.

The tires are heavier 75 pounds, vs 65 for the BFGs, the ride seems rougher like the sidewalls are stiffer (but I don't know) I did get a rainy day to play in and the tires never broke traction, and I was pushing it through turns, etc.

The tires raised the truck almost a full inch at the bumper and wheel wells.

Questions, I did not get a spare yet, wanted to make sure it would fit under the truck....Is this too close?

And they don't fit inside the downward shaped arms... just bend back?

Am I the only one that has drawn the parallel that guys shopping for tires on this website are like girls shopping for shoes? Nothing personal, just a general observation of the various tire threads. oops.

I wish my wife took that long to choose shoes! I read all the tire threads here, Googled the crap out my choices and read too many reviews. Like I said, I waited over a year (after installing my lift) for the 31s to wear out enough to justify buying new shoes, err tires... I will put the BFGs back on for non-trip miles in the summer, but wanted better tread depth for the snow to come. Since my truck is non-ABS I can run both the stock 16 rims (well the ones I took off my 4Runner) or 15 inch rims (the ones I took off my 92 Toyota truck) so that added to my research... which rims to keep ; )

I have weekends off in Dec and then not again till Sept 2010, at least not both days till then : (

I played on the local dirt roads and a farmer's field access road today.... the tires seemed to self clean fairly well, but I was alone, so I didn't venture into deep mud. But I had fun!

Odds are your tires are E-rated as the 235/85 is a common full-size dually truck tire. This would explain the stiffness and extra weight. My 235/85's + alloy rim = 82 lbs. suucks.

Haha, that's the hardest part for me. I always want something different long before I get near any tread bars.

How much air pressure are you running? My load range D's feel like rocks above 45psi....you might try playing around with different pressures until you get a good ride with good wear. My Tundra is running 38 in the front and 30 in the rear (unloaded)

So I ordered my rear view camera so I could be more like you.... at checkout there are two options, a 3.5 inch screen or 7 inch screen....well since I grew up in Texas you know which way I went ; )

I didn't go sit in the truck and see HOW BIG 7 inches is... the monitor is having a hard time finding a home, it's too big to go on the visor, and there is no dash space... doh!

But I did wire mine to be on when ever the lights are on...

I had Geolander AT-S tires in the exact same size on my '04 Tacoma. I really liked them. Never tried to mount a spare, my thought was that a spare was just that - a spare, designed to get me home or to a place where I could repair it and I figured the minor difference in size between a 235/85 and the factory 265/70 wouldn't be enough to cause any severe problems (not like my AWD Subaru where I was promised dire consequences if I ran different tire sizes, so dire that they actually advise you to pull a fuse to disable the AWD system when you have a spare on.)

When my current BFG KO's wear out I'll most likely go back to the Geolanders in the 235/85/16 size, as that seems to be a good size for the kind of traveling I do.

I remember reading your thoughts on the Geolanders and they pushed me over the edge to trying them... no pressure ; )

That is part of why I posted yet another tire thread... all the info really helped me choose, so I wanted to pass on the info I had. Thanks to all that have shared in the past!

I was curious about just leaving the 265 as the spare.... the other reason I liked teh 235s were everybody seemed to have the size in stock, so I don't think it will be hard to find a replacement if needed, but I am planning a 2 week trip to Nova Scotia, and was more concerned about that trip and having a spare.... thoughts?
