New Tundra Release

Is anyone else looking forward to the new release of the Tundra at the Chicago auto sh0w? I've had mine for more than ten years now, and it has been a pretty good rig, but I'm hoping the new ones are a significant enough improvement to justify the investment in the new vehicle. Here are some of the things I am hoping for:

1. Direct injection, gas costs 3.25 a gallon, ouch;
2. Stiffer frame, the current generation of Tundras have had frame issues since inception, this needs to be remedied;
3. Bigger fuel tank. 35 gallons seems about right;
4. Less body, more tire, duh;
5. How about a Double Cab available with the stubby bed? Before you guys ask, why have a short bed with the shorter Double Cab? I say, look at all the tacos with the short bed and four doors, it seems like a winning combination. I want a four door half ton that will pull a camper and still fit in the frackin' garage. Is that too much too ask? As we get older, the tow behind camper is the best way to have females actually want to come along;
6. Make it less ugly. Geez, I thought the Titans were bad.

I agree with most points.

Add: Crew Max with 6.5' bed.

Body indeed is out of proportion. I think the Chevy's look the best. I kinda have a thing for the "cat eye" era Chevy's.

I don't expect much other than a body refresh from Toyota, maybe new a face and that is it...I am guessing 4Runner-esc angles. At least that is what I can tell from the spy shots.

willing to bet this photoshop job isn't too far off

Yeah, from the spy photos they seem to be going in the wrong direction. It's too bad, you may be on to something with the Chevy. There is one more item I neglected to mention on my wishlist:
7. Electronic rear locker, Ford and Nissan already have these, does Toyota want to compete, or not?

Can we get a half-ton the size of the first gen Tundra? I've thought the new style should be an oversized 3/4 ton line, the Tacoma would grow just a little more to a real half-ton (gen 1 Tundra size for reals) with a V8 option, and then Toyota could reintroduce a nice cool looking mini-truck like the pre-tacoma rides were......

ooooh, and a Power-Wagon style version would be sweet, selectable lockers, winch, skid plates (real ones), and a bumper that doesn't look like it's ready to plow snow....

The first gens, did have the proportions right, think you're right about the current body...looks more the size of the 3/4-1 tons. Remember when the half tons to 1 tons shared the same body size?

Now you're really dreaming with the Power Wagon style!

ugghh...if those spy shots are right I am definitely buying a sprinter van...
I have been half heartedly holding out for the tacoma/tundra redesigns thinking...maybe...just maybe...we will get a tacoma with hilux styling...mmmmmm...that just tastes right...but back to the tundra
Toyota is killing me with the styling...they look like a puffer fish...all bloated with a little tiny mouth (grill)...

That's funny, cause I like the current Tacoma styling over the HiLux. The body lines are OK, but I think the grill and headlights is just horrendous. Back to the Tundra, I think all the fullsize trucks are suffering from excessive bloated styling.

I agree...and it is the reason why if I wanted a "full size" I would get a 2006 tundra...much better styling IMO

I like the current Taco over the HiLux as well....don't really mind the new face lift.

I keep on looking at the GM's same mpgs as a Taco, a little bigger, but not too big...a lot more power, especially if you get the Max package, mileage goes down a tad, but hey! Curious to see what the numbers are with the new Eco-Tec V-8's. The cylinder deactivation sounds intriguing.

An extra cab short bed or a crew with a stubby bed could work for me.

the whole cylinder deactivation thing just sounds like something else to break, and be an expensive fix at that.

all new vehicles are complicated, "if it has tits or wheels it is gonna give ya trouble" ;)...at least Chevy and Ford are trying something different. Toyota is getting a big "meh" from this looong time fan. They really need to step it up.

I heard one of the issues with the cylinder deactivation is, that it is the same cylinders shutting down, which will operated at cooler temperature causing the rings to wear out faster.

Maybe Chevy has addressed this with the new engines? Time will tell.

The Chevy 5.3's are having trouble with cylinder de-activation. Vibration issues, and total engine life that is reduced. Those 5.3's used to be bulletproof until 300k now its 200k.

A first gen Taco with an LS1 would indeed be cool.

A new Tacoma with a 4.6 V8 Toyota would be sweet, but my personal money is no object dream truck, would be mine with the 5.7 from the big Tundra, with all the running gear. Big, bulletproof differentials, better transmission, etc. Tie it together with lockers and a long travel suspension, and I'd be one happy camper.......
