Newbie Vehicle Choice

I'll start by saying I am currently deployed in Iraq. I am thinking about a vehicle to buy when I get back. I currently have a 300zx but it is a money pit. It also doesn't fit into what I desire out of a vehicle (it was an impulse buy from a friend, but I'm not satisfied with a sports car).

Also, I've known nothing about cars most of my life. I knew how to put gas in and maybe a simple oil change. Being in the army, I've learned a few things about vehicles. Mostly about the ones we use, but general knowledge as well.

So I'm faced with a tough decision. There is a lot of information out there, and while most of it is very technical (especially here and ih8mud) I better understand what I'm looking at when people start talking about builds and changes to their vehicles for preventative maintenance.

So, knowing all this, I'm planning on spending between 15-20k on a vehicle. This vehicle will be a DD and will unfortunately spend most of its life on the highway and back roads. That being said, I plan on doing the offroad thing now and then. I have offroaded in military vehicles before (both training and missions) and have enjoyed it enough to want to be able to do it when the urge hits me.

So the dirty basics for a vehicle (not listed in preference order, as they are all important):
1. 15-20k
2. Decent fuel economy (DD and be able to make road trips on highways not feel horrible, I know diesel is an option, but those will cost a ton up front, especially if it's a swap)
3. 4WD (I'll be going back to Pittsburgh eventually, and I want to be safe on the roads with ice, something my 300zx is not)
4. Storage (for now, I have a lot of things I have accumulated. Later on, I want to be able to go camping, hiking, and hunting)
5. Offroading capabilities (I don't need to be able to tackle the hardest trails or ford through 3 feet of water, just be able to handle dirt trails with small obstacles that would hang up a station wagon or something similar)
6. Lower cost of maintenance (I could buy another money sink like my 300zx, but that's not what I'm looking for)
7. Good availability of parts (I don't want this vehicle down for weeks waiting on a part to be shipped from Aus or Japan, also aftermarket support would be a huge bonus)
8. Decent lifetime expectancy (I know a new car will last me a while, especially if taken care of, but I was looking more towards the used side, and hope to find something that will hit 300,000mi on the odometer without many hiccups)

I know this may be a difficult thing to figure out, as most of the vehicles I have looked at so far have tradeoffs. The venerable LC (especially the FZJ80s) will last a long time and will fit most of the bill. The prohibitive parts are the fuel economy, maintenance costs (considering this was not a cheap SUV to get in the first place) and parts down the line.

I have looked at other Toyotas and other makes. They all have tradeoffs. If you were in my position, which direction would you go?

Thanks for any advice.

Just FYI, this post will get more replies if you post it in the "fireside chat" area, as it's really more of a Fireside Chat topic.

Also, your requirements are rather open-ended so it's hard to say what will fit. 15-20k is a pretty large budget which means the sky's the limit. You could either get a late model vehicle and modify it slightly, or get an older vehicle for less $$ up front and then spend the extra money modifying it. Really, given your budget, even a diesel swap is not out of the question.

Cost of maintenance and parts availability are also rather open-ended questions. To me it would rule out the various Land Rovers but I'm sure the LR folks will vigorously defend their chosen brand and point out that maintenance/parts aren't that expensive, etc.

You haven't mentioned the biggest variable which is: What do you need to haul/carry with this vehicle? You said DD but I know from experience that a DD for a single guy is very, very different from a DD for a man with a family. When I was single an extra cab or even a regular cab pickup was a fine DD. Once I got a family, the pickup was no longer suitable and I switched to an SUV, primarily because I needed something that could carry more than 1 other person in comfort.

The other variables are: What kind of mods do you intend to make, and what do you consider "decent" mileage? What is your preferred drivetrain: Do you insist on a manual transmission? If so that will limit your vehicle choices. Do you need to be able to sleep in it? That also rules out smaller vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler or FJ Cruiser. Hard top or soft? (Of course, there's really only one soft-top vehicle in this category, the aforementioned Wrangler.) Do you intend to pull a trailer? Do you intend on mounting a rooftop tent? Do you need to be able to park it in a garage?

Until we know those things, I'd be hesitant make a recommendation because anything as anything from a 4wd regular cab Taco with a 4 cyl and a manual transmission, up to a Suburban or 4wd van could be appropriate for you depending on your requirements.

My recommendation....

Dodge 2500, 2003-2007, 5.9 cummins, regular cab, long box, 4wd. Get as basic of a truck as you can. The base model with crank windows is great. If you want really simple get the manual trans version. Lever shift transfer case. Don't be afraid of 100,000+ miles.

The early 2003-2004 versions will get 20mpg if driven nicely. The engine will last 500K miles easy. Get the base model so you don't have a lot of electronic stuff like power windows and locks to break.

You can run large tires with very little work. I would go with 37s with the axles moved 1/2" on each end. Keep the factory wheels if you can, they work correctly.

The 3rd gen dodge can be a 1000hp hot rod, a pre-runner, an expedition truck, or whatever. IMOO they are one of the best overall platforms to build. If I had it to do over again. I would go with a 3rd gen dodge.....

Test drive a Nissan Xterra. Model year 2005 to 2011 have a very capable 4litre engine (285 hp). Manual or automatic trans, 4x4, avail locking rear diff on "off-road" models....

Great towing ability, lots of storage. Large roof rack etc ...

Stock Xterras are quite agile off-road - decent supply of after market parts if you want to modify ...

Most important: very comfortable highway vehicle ! Easy on fuel (20mpgs)

Assembled in the USA !

Many clubs and online forums - for cheap parts, easy fixes to common issues etc ...

Happy shopping !
