Not content to let Canon (G11) and Panasonic (Lumix DMC-LX5) have all the attention, Nikon just introduced a compact camera aimed at photo enthusiasts. The P7000 spec sheet reads like a copy of the Canon G11: 10 MP CCD sensor, wide angle 7x zoom, an optical viewfinder as well as 3 inch LCD screen with 920,000 pixels, optical image stabilization, lots of manual control of the picture-taking process.

Looks good on paper!

404: Micro 4/3rds not found. :smilies27

Different beasts. These are all in ones, the small interchangables are not. I just picked up an E-P2, and while so far I like it, it's still not nearly as flexible as a compact. My S90 and G9 can go from wide to telephoto to macro all in one little package, the small interchangables can not.

As for the P7000, it sure has quite the spec sheet. 7 times zoom, HD video with AF, usable high ISO... I could see one of these making it into my wifes bag.

What I'm getting at is: Nikon and Canon both need to stop screwing around with so-called "premium" point-and-shoots (they have plenty that qualify already) and catch up to Olympus/Panasonic/Sony with a prosumer-level, interchangeable lensed, mirrorless body.

It will be interesting when the "big two" do reveal their micro 4/3rds bodies.

That they have not do so already makes me think they are working on an FX format body to lead the market (Leica already offers the M9 which is a RF sized, full frame digi but it's over 7k)

The new Nikon has a mic jack for an external microphone
Most HD Capable still cameras do not have one

Makes for an interesting tool for shooting video
