Nps vs fg

No worries. Will do. He didn't need much convincing. All I talk about at work is what everyone's doing on Expo with their trucks. He was happy to give something back to these guys. This is such a unique forum that is absolutely worth supporting. As I said we should have done it earlier but we weren't in that position.

Most of the forums I've been associated in the past have been full of guys mudslinging at one another and it's very hard to get any real info or help out of any one. The guys who are in the know are sick of answering the same questions to newbies all the time and everyone gets into little sub groups and eventually loose interest. One thing here is that new members are made to feel genuinely welcome from the start. I mean everyone wants to see new members trucks, hear about their experiences, etc. I know I was certainly made welcome by guys like Doug Hackney, Mike Hiscox, Dave (Klahnie), Brent (Bajaroad), Chip and anyone whose name was Tom (no matter how you spelt it)
And then of course don't forget the great job that the moderators do.

Engineer, another thing is that although this is predominantly an American forum we, as Aussies, have also been so accepted from the get go. This is it. We don't really have any Australian forums dedicated to FG's and the type of cabover trucks we use here. As a result I've been really plugging ExPo to all our customers as a primary resource for unbiased opinions on vehicle setups, travel experiences, modifications, buying tips, blah, blah. The flipside is that as we have so many years of experience with these trucks, we also have much to contribute and you are one of the best examples of that. I doubt that there would be anyone else here with as many miles behind the wheel of an FG and I certainly doubt there would be anyone here with as many hours putting spanners on them.

So again, no worries I'll pass on the thanks.
John.

It's funny that i never really saw it as "American". As we recently had the U.S.S. Essex dock in Cairns with all the Marines, I suppose I got used to the americanisms. BTW, you guys over the pond can be proud of your Marines, they are the nicest and most courteous of any armed force that has ever visited FNQ. I was really happy to find this place, finally we all talk the same language!!!! NPS V's FG???? he he he.....

Advice From Someone Who Knows

As far as NPS 300 compared to the FG,which one is the most capable of providing the lowest Flat Bed height if you are going to use it as a Dual Purpose vehicle.
Cheers

Hi John. First post heh? I'm sure it won't be the last. So welcome anyway.

As for tray height. There really isn't much in it IF you mount the tray on the FG a certain way. I've seen some FG trays mounted far higher than they needed to be. The old NPS has one piece "stepped" chassis rails shaped much the same as the FG but the new NPS by contrast is straight. I know I've been saying for ages that I'll continue with this thread but I just haven't had a chance. We have a new NPS at work at the moment and I've started to collect some detailed pics for when I do. So I hope to go into more detail then.

Anyway the limiting factor seems to be wheel travel if you want a flat tray (which of course you do). Especially if you fit bigger single rear wheels. There is alot to be said for the new NPS chassis over the old one. Although the old one was 6 mm and one piece rails with rivetless flanges too. Heavier (so less payload) but was so much stronger than a 4.5mm FG chassis. The new NPS is still 6mm but the rails are straight and importantly 850mm apart instead of 750mm. So all the suspension seems to work better and the webs are also plastered with common hole spacings making any fitting or juggling around of batteries, fuel tanks, etc, a piece of cake.

Are you looking at a new truck?

I am looking at Buying New

But because I am going to use the truck to carry a Large Slide-On camper and alot of the time tow a boat that weighs about 1.8ton,the choice is relative to the these 3 main items
1, Engine power and Torque.
With the FG I can always increase power and torque by Exhaust and a Chip.
The NPS, because of the DPD I am very restricted unless I do a Full PCM upgrade from the FSS 550 ( I've been told it can be done )

2, Ride Comfort On Road as well as Off,
Got no idea which Truck is better or worse.

3,Chassis Strength and height, keeping in mind suspension mods and 19.5" wheels,
The NPS has thicker chassis rails and they are 850mm apart instead of 750 on the FG

Welcome Oz, hope you like it here.
I've noticed the NPS has the same spacer blocks over the rear axle as the FTS. whilst it has never given me trouble, it is something that i don't really like. But then I had a bad habit of breaking U bolts..........

1. Can't comment on power, haven't driven either loaded...
2. As bad as each other, get John to do a conversion.
3. Leaning towards Isuzu there.....

Hi There Engineer,
I have spoken to John about some of what I want but I will definitely be getting them to do a lot of the work on the Wheels / Tyres and Suspension.

I can recommend the long leaf suspension, one of the companies has had alot of success with it on Cape York. Will be interesting to see the new package though....

John. I know a guy who did the 185 hp upgrade from an NPR 450 on a new NPS . Said it was awesome but for basically the same cost he could have had the 205hp upgrade from the NPS 550. He had the dealer do it and while it isn't officially offered as an option he is defintely still covered by warranty.

It involves swapping the ECU and DPD. Also in about 2 weeks we are doing our first real suspension upgrade on an NPS. One of our customers organized his own parabolics and we are hoping to get a drive of it soon but the NPS upgrade we are going to do soon will involve longer springs.

BTW Chocko did you know that the new NPS has 100mm longer springs than the old model? On the front anyway.

John I should add that there wouldn't be much difference in cost either. A really top exhaust and a dyno tuned chip is around the same bucks as a ECU and DPD. Maybe only 500 bucks difference I've been told.
