OBDII Computer.

Hi guys, I am getting ready to buy my own OBDII computer to troubleshoot my problematic P38 Range Rover. Does anyone have a list of what the codes mean when the numbers pop up? I haven't looked at a computer yet, but I think I remember someone saying it just tells you codes, and who knows what the codes mean? I figure someone here has em on file. I'm going computer shopping today. I am tired of the P38, but need to keep it going because it's my wifes main vehicle. Seems every time I repair or replace something on it, it's not a month goes by it has another problem.

Several code readers will include a software disc which will allow you to connect the code reader to your PC and decipher the codes, you can also use google.
For a list of codes see http://rangerovers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=26233&p=200420&hilit=codes#p200420
The Standard OBDII Scan Codes.

Special *Codes* are used to identify the 4 Oxygen Sensors

A= Bank A of the engine. Cylinder #1 is located on Engine Bank A
B= Bank B of the engine.
U= Upstream of the Catalytic Converter
D= Downstream of the Catalytic Converter

Example:
A D = Oxygen Sensor Engine Bank A, Downstream of the Catalytic Converter

Special Codes

As well as the standard codes each manufacturer has their own specific codes, and a unique header code/name from the ISO.
Rover specific header code names are 502 - 511
I don't have any information about usage on vehicles
Relevant codes could be

Rover 502 - 511
Lucas 850 - 860 CBS/ABS
862 - 863 Diesel fuel engine control
877 ditto
939 ditto
Wabco 121 - 125 Breaking systems
SAGEM ? 795 - 799 Engine management
?GEMS? 837 Chassis
880 On board electronics

Hope this helps, and maybe then you can stop bashing the P38, most issues and how to fix them are well documented.:) The factory workshop manual and Electrical manual are essential.
With most LR's maintenance is key, with the P38 especially.
Couple of points which may help
P38's are very sensitive to battery voltage and condition.
The BeCM does not like to get wet (carpet steam cleaning and leaking heater O rings being the usual culprits).
The fuse box located next to the radiator header tank can fail and produce some really interesting electrical faults. It is a quick easy and some what inexpensive (for a P38) fix.

I ended up with the INNOVA 3130 ScanTool (CanOBD2) unit. It comes with software, and you can hook it to a PC etc.

I plugged it into the P38 and it said P0305 Cylinder 5 misfire. So I am thinking fouled plug...... Of course, it could be more, but I am not a mechanic, just a wanna be mechanic haha.

This unit is pretty cool, and allows real time data while driving the vehicle (if you can drive your vehicle !!).

For the heck of it I plugged it into my Discovery (great vehicle, never a problem since it rolled off the lot with us), got a green light, all systems normal.

Then plugged into my 100 series Land Cruiser, same as the Disco, green light all systems normal.

The 3130 is nice, it can be used on all American, European, and Asian vehicles born in 1996 or later. Has a backlit display too.

- Thanks for the replies fellas!

Can that unit display real time sensor readings, not just error codes?

The www.scangauge.com does that and I'm a big fan, though I haven't invested in one yet. It's one more tool for troubleshooting.

Welcome to the world of having your car tell you what's wrong.

Yes this model has the real time readings. Of course it warns you to have someone drive while you are looking at it haha.

Heh, yeah... sometimes I have to drive while *programming* my engine computer on my track car. :yikes:

haha... yeah :coffeedrink:

I was scootin down the freeway watching it tell me my speed and RPMs and all the other data I don't know what I am looking at yet LOL

If you've still got the EAS system I'd also recommend purchasing the serial cable from http://www.rswsolutions.com/. He has basically cracked the proprietary software issues with the EAS and his cable allows you to diagnose and reset EAS faults, even the hard faults, by hooking up your laptop and using his free software. That is one of the best buys I've made for the P38.
