Yes, it does increase the inside temp. Two options paint the hardtop white or a lighter color. Or create a second dual top with a roof rack. I have done this in the past on my 03 Rubicon. I could run the AC on level 2 during the heat of an Arizona summer with the interior nice and cool. With todays gas prices this option is questionable. I am attempting it on my new 07 JK. The biggest problem is the larger roof rack span is going to need one heavy sheet of ???. I have used Aluminum in the past but cost and weight are making me look for other options. While living in Arizona I talked to a Jeep owner that used a laser temp. gauge on his painted white hard top. He noticed a substantial difference in temp. As I recall it was 70 to 100 degree difference. Also the larger space inside the 4 door causes a cooling problem. There is no rear AC.

I painted my JK hardtop silver because of how friggin hot the black got and it lowered the interior temp 30 to 40 deg when its been sitting in the sun. You can touch the outside of the top now with out burning your hand.

Use Sno-Roof, the stuff you paint on to trailer house roofs. That I belive has some insulative propertys.

I have the Wild Boar Products Fastback T-Top hard top. It has some sort of indoor/outdoor carpeting on the inside, which seems to help because I didn't notice it being hot when I was in FL last month.

If you go to COP4x4 and get the top from them, they can paint it any color you want, and even put in an alligator headliner. Hmmm...I wonder how that would be at insulation. Afterall...gators are in the sun quite a bit.

I checked mine yesterday after reading the first post.
The outside was realy hot, the inside was pretty hot...while sitting.
On my way home from work the inside was barely warm, not sure about the outside though.

I can see that while the Jeep is sitting in a parking lot the heat accumulates but when you start moving the air should cool the outside and in turn the inside of the top will cool as well.

The thing that bugs me is the newer wranglers come only with black tops which is the worst color for the heat. When I bought my '97 TJ it had a white soft top and you could get a white factory top, too. The hard top I bought later is tan which isn't too bad.

Has anybody tried gluing insulation in the roof to make a headliner?

The second top Gear mentions really works - Land Rovers used double skin safari roofs for years. A roof rack with a tarp over all the stuff does the same thing.

No doubt!

Unless I have to travel north of Austin in the winter, I don't expect I will put the top back on my Jeep. It's been down/off completely since late March. I've got the Safari top to keep me from getting cooked, and I figure when winter gets here I'll just put the doors back on and be good to go. Maybe. I freely admit that I am a total and complete wuss when it comes to the cold - which I define as anything less than about 70 degrees.

The only downside (other than occasionally sitting on a wet seat for the drive to work) is that this stupid neighborhood cat has decided it likes sleeping in the Jeep at night. And of course it's a white cat. Stupid cat. :violent-smiley-031: Oh well. I guess I can consider myself fortunate that it hasn't decided the Jeep is a nice big yellow litter box.
