It's here!!!

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/01/14/2014-jeep-grand-cherokee-gets-surprisingly-comprehensive-update/

"The new look and features are all well and good, but the main event here is a comprehensively updated powertrain menu, including the aforementioned alt-fuel option, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 that Chrysler expects will deliver 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Owners can expect 21 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway, and the model features a 7,400-pound tow rating to go with its leg-crossing cruising range of up to 730 miles on a single tank."

A friend's wife owns a loaded out 2012 GC. Two weekends ago I convinced him to take it out on a light trail. Granted we didn't throw any strong challenges at it but there was some mud and lots of soft sand. The rig surprised me with how much traction it maintained with full pressure road tires. I think with some aggressive tires the GC would be a very capable rig. And the interior....geesch is it nice. The materials were very nicely chosen and assembled, didn't have anything that felt cheap or plastic'y...nor should it at that MSRP.

Thanks Jeep for taking the first step towards a diesel JK by introducing the engine to the lineup. Now let's see if consumers will do their part by actually purchasing a diesel.

I enjoy my 2012 ML350 BlueTec which has the same chassis as the WK2.....700+ miles is pushing it I am thinking...reality is probably more like 650 miles.....I see 28-29 hwy in the ML350.

Regulations here in the states and in Europe are starting to come together. Other automakers are bringing more diesel offerings here in the next few years. This might be the time finally.
This is a totally different motor from your BlueTec, so we really have no way of knowing how efficient this will be. This is a VM Motori diesel.

Preliminary estimates according to everything i've been reading show it to be 21 city/30 highway. I really hope that is accurate!

Remember, that's the 2WD. The 4WD is 20 city/28 highway. Still very good numbers for this vehicle.

Keep in mind that it may do better or worse than that number. As always, YMMV.

The 7400 tow rating is still a bit on the weak side for those of us who would like to tow our Jeep with another Jeep, someday though....

Yep...MY 2008 CRD is rated at that and I would not put more than 5000lbs behind it....

The article also lists changes to improve off-road performance: lower crawl ratio, improved terrain control settings, and new hill ascent and descent mode with driver control of speed.

Looks like the diesel will get somewhere near 33% better fuel economy than the 5.7L gas V8. Now we need to hear how much extra Jeep plans to charge for the diesel engine.
