Ontario Tacoma

Hey Guys,

I just thought I would introduce myself. I have a 2002 Tacoma TRD that I am looking to better equip for mild expo travel. Currently, I have put the Bilstein CO's up front and a rear aal with Bil's in the rear. I am looking at maybe replacing the rear with the Dakar's. I would like to start some other mod's in prepartation for a trip this spring.

I live in Ontario and have family all over North America. I look forward to better equiping my rig for a little exploration with each family visit. This past summer I did a trip through Northern BC, Alaska, Yukon, and back down through the Jasper and so on. This has since sparked my interest in going further up into the Yukon and NWT. I am pondering a trip to Tuktoyaktuk. Does anyone have good info on the Whitehorse to Tuktoyaktuk leg of this trip. I have peeked at a few threads, but need a bit better info on driving times through this last leg.

Thanks,

Nick

Hello and welcome:wavey: Dakar's would be great. I replaced my Alcan AAL with custom Alcans and they are great. I have always had an interest in heading up into the NWT, but that won't happen for years I am sure. Got yet another move, a wedding and honeymoon to pay for. Don't wait, take every oppurtunity to get out and explore.

First off, welcome to ExPo! It's nice to see some new Canadian folks starting to pop up.

I'm not sure if you have read too many suspension related posts, but these two are worthy of mention:

  1. tacoma suspension up grades

  2. How heavy is your Tacoma?

You should spend some serious time considering your current set up and future needs before spending a dime on suspension. I've had to change mine 3 times now. It's better to go a bit overkill and cover future scenarios that having to re-do later IMO.

Also take some time defining what you need your truck to do (i.e. lay out what types of activities you will do and what plans you have for your rig).

Finally, you may cancell your Master Card, Visa or any other credit cards you have at this point. Trust me you will thank me later!

Cheers ,

Thanks for the welcomes...

I will definitely check out those links. I understand what you are saying about doing things once. I really don't want to be the guy selling off parts that I only purchased a couple months ago...

I know that you would not be the first to do so! Make sure to figure out your unloaded and loaded weight, most companies who make custom leaf packs (Deaver and Alcan) will both want to know.

Cheers,
P

Sounds like a great trip - North Western Canada / Alaska is on my short list of places to see... There are a few of us located in Ontario on the board now - maybe our paths will cross one of these days.

Thanks for the welcome Shearpin. Are you actually in Toronto or outside? If you have any memorable "local" day or short trips you would recommend, I'd love to hear about them. I really want to get out on a couple of nice local or Ontario trips to help persuade the wife. The more positive experiences she has, the better for me. I am planning on the NWT trip with my dad. He has already been convinced...:littlefriend:

Yeah, I live in the west end of Toronto - it has been 7 years now. For the first 3 of those years I'd left my Rover elsewhere for travel. Throw a marriage, house, and daughter (now almost 1 year old) into the remaining 4.... well, the trips have been few and far between.

I have taken a few solo trips with my wife into the Bobcaygeon area. There is a fairly large tract of crown land their with a network of trails to explore. The trail choices range from very difficult to simple forest tracks. The ground is rocky enough that even after rains the mud is generally passable. There is also a large lake suitable for a canoe.

Arbeg is another lake side camping area with plenty of trails to explore. The drive up takes you into the Canadian sheild making for rocky trails that are rougher on passengers. I was just up their last month - my daughters first trip - I'd suggest it.

I'll mention your post to my brother. He has a lot more experience in Ontario then I do. I've got a larger Rover for the family now and my daughter is old enough that I hope to get out more next season.

I really like your M101 Hummer trailer that is on your site. I am considering picking one up to convert to a camping setup. Do you know if there is a difference between the M101 and M101 2?

Finally some progress.....

So I have been long overdue updating the progress of my rig.... SORRY ABOUT THE POOR PHOTO QUALITY!!!

I am now sporting an ARB front bumper with Lightforce XGT's. I used the IPF remote wiring harness for the install.
Taco002.jpg

I also replaced the factory alloys with some Teflon Mojaves. I plan to wrap them in the new Toyo MT 255/85R16 soon...
Taco001.jpg

I also decided to throw on the SC, URD fuel mods and headers and catback exhaust.... This will be nice increase in power...
Taco003.jpg

With the SC install came a Pillar pod with boost and trans temp gauges... my trans temp goes in tomorrow...
Taco005.jpg

And finally I tucked my AFR gauge in the centre console...

Next few mods will include Dakars, 255 Toyo's, regear, slider, traction bar, skid row skids...:ylsmoke: And I almost forgot, I have a line on a Fabfours rear tire carrier from a JK that may be able to be modded up to fit the Taco... Clicky here for some pics...
