ORU Bruin XL vs. FWC Project M vs. Tune M1 vs Topo Rincon

We are looking at a vertical wall pop up camper for our family of 4 (kids are currently 7 and 9). We've gone up and down with tow behind campers and currently have a toy hauler we are looking to sell. I've got a canopy on my truck with an Ikamper Skycamp on it for now but really like the pop up campers.

I'm hoping to get some feedback on the 4 prospective campers listed in the title.

Initially the king bed size of the ORU Bruin XL really drew me in, but it does look extremely boxy. I like the lines of the Tune M1 but I've seen some concern over bolted construction in the forums. FWC has a local dealer to me so that is a draw in an of itself but I'm concerned about sleeping space. The Topo Rincon looks great but seems basic and I didn't see an option for flip up side doors.

My rig is a 2500 Mega Cab if it matters but looking to build out a family overland setup. Any input and actual experience is very much appreciated! My buddy has got me looking hard at popups now that he has a dirtbox genesis on his raptor, but I need more sleeping room than him.

Curious as to why you leave out OVRLND Campers? Especially now that they've intro'd their "Chubby" version that allows for an East/West sleeping platform, if that's the draw to some others. I WISH they had the Chubby when we bought ours...and am...kinda, sorta, maybe considering upgrading to one. But I also don't feel like building all new walls, rewiring, etc. I've seen them all in person with some use in an FWC. FWC is...meh. They are, historically, really slow to upgrade things while still charging higher tech prices, IMO. Between the ORU and the Tune...I'm just more impressed with the quality of the Tune. I've seen the same SPECULATION, but I haven't heard of any real world issues. They were a really strong contender when we were looking, but didn't offer the barn doors at the time, and even now that they do...still no option for a tailgate delete FULL barn door. Really happy with our OVRLND, however, and with the upgraded options that are available now? Simply awesome bang for the buck. We've had ours nearly three years and it's good as new...save for a dent in the leading right corner and a small separation along the left roof seam due to some tree spotting errors. Simply recaulked the seam, and the dent has no functional effect. You can get them in a nearly endless combo of windows, hatches, hatches with windows...

Ovrlnd was on the list but I was struggling to find the dimensions for the sleep surface. I listed my top 4 and ovrlnd was number 5 on my list haha. Do they have a similar bed size with the chubby? I think the bruin xl is 80x80 for the kind and the tune was very similar.

The width varies slightly as it's made for each truck, so your bed rails will dictate that. I have mine on a 2500 "Trade Wagon" but can't recall, exactly. I think it's 68". It's 2x 40" wide platforms, though, so 100% 80" in that respect. The Chubby is 7" wider. So best guess is 75x80. That's one advantage the Tune has, though...a larger cabover. I think? it's a queen...or damn near it...with a small extension available to convert to a king. The OVRLND Chubby is still only 40" wide when the bed is collapsed. For solo camping, that'd be great as I wouldn't have to slide the extension out, but with my wife (and one of the dogs) up there, I'd still have to slide it out.

Another "wish" with OVRLND is that they'd move to zippered windows/coverings. Some folks prefer velcro. It's cheaper, lighter, less prone to failure...I get it. But it's LOUD as hell, snags stuff, etc. We have zippers on the windows and insulation in our trailer and it's 1,000x better, IMO.

As mentioned by another poster, have you seen any comments regarding concerns about the Tune's bolt together construction from actual owners or just keyboard jockeys? I have yet to see that from a Tune owner, of which I am one, and I'm active on the owner's group. It's a great camper with a ton of space. Have ours on a Power Wagon.

To your point no, only what the keyboard warriors want to fill the internet with but I am very interested. Do you have pics of it on your truck? How many people do you sleep in it? How hard can you rail with it on the truck?

I sleep 4 in my OVRLND Campers and it's been great.


3 up top and my oldest sleeps on a platform below. They also offer a "chubby" version now that's wider than the truck. Of course sleeping space for four depends on the length of your truck bed. My first gen Tundra is 74".

I’m at 4.5 years in on our Ovrlnd and it’s been stellar. We don’t shy away from rough trails and bad washboards and it has performed flawlessly. Jay will pretty much build it anyway you want and the thing is stout, but light (mine was CAT scaled weighed 362 on my Tundra when I got it). The TIG welding on the frame was beautifully done, and it was overbuilt for strength. It’s a proven platform.
