Our 'new to us' 2000 X

I'll do some research on that Dr! Thanks.

I think I am going to cheap out a bit for the time being...I found the Yakima basket for the factory xterra roof rack as well as a dual upright kayak support (we have two emotion ocean yaks). I like the low profile and that it attaches directly. I need to do some measuring to see if the 05+ racks have the same O.D. as the racks on the Gen. 1's.

Happy Thanksgiving all.

I hope this doesn't sound crazy...but, just by adding the Bilsteins it feels like a different vehicle. Tighter steering, better braking, 90% of the steering 'wobble' is gone; I am amazed. This is my first used car in some time, so I am use to the vehicle being tight from the factory, it feels almost that good.

What was the part numbers for your shocks? I am ordering some Bilsteins ASAP and here is what I have picked

Heavy Duty Series (B46-1099-H2) 0-3" Lifted Front (24-187824)

Heavy Duty Series 0-2" Lift Rear (24-184908)

Here is the direct link to eshocks.com... http://www.eshocks.com/bil_Ind.asp?VC=69Q10&SubChar=Q

Looks like 24-187824 (F4-B46-1099-H2) for the front and 24-185011 (F4-BE3-6422-H0) at the rear.

Thanks Dr! If you get a chance are the cross bars the same shape and size (height and width through the section)? I appreciate it greatly!

Don't forget to check the right rear leaf spring. It is extremely common for 2000 Xterra to break a leaf. Not the main one but one of the smaller ones. Changed out 5 or 6 of them on mine and friend's trucks.

Could be the distributor too... They tend to wear out 100-150k

Read up on the #6 plug... Its a mother to get to... Well really they all are ;)

Seems like often when the distributor goes it's actually just a bearing for the shaft that fails. The bearing is about $2 and you can replace it yourself (I've done it twice, long story) pretty easily, although it helps to have a hydraulic press to push the bearing back in (I didn't). It's pretty easy to take apart the distributor and in my experience it will be very obvious if the bearing is shot so it should be easy to identify or eliminate that as an issue if the plugs/wire/cap/rotor don't solve it.

The #6 plug really is that bad. I bought a few cheapo extensions and multiple ujoints in order to get the socket in there. I would recommend doing the same.

I've got links to write ups on the distributor fix and contorting back to plug 6. Can't recall the rules regarding linking to other forums here on expo so I'll refrain. PM me if you're interested.

PM Sent. I've been doing some digging and from what I've read I don't have the same symptoms as many of the other distributor issues (i.e. surging idle, no power, dieing on the side of the road). But I may just replace it anyway when I am doing the plugs, wires and cap/rotor. Or, if the rebuild seems feasible I may give that a shot. I just need to read up a bit more on actually installing the distributor and aligning the teeth correctly.

There are a few used stock units on ebay for less than $100 (+/- 50,000 miles) compared to new which are $260+. May just grab one of them for now and see if that helps.

My Yakima basket should be here today and the Yakima clips came yesterday, I'll post a few pics this weekend showing the shocks and the few other goodies that have been added on.

Thanks all for the input!

Poser shots below....:p

We were visiting my in-laws and I remembered this old service road that we use to use when we were younger; neat road with some very promising trout holes. Then we proceeded to pick up the Christmas tree. We are really enjoying the truck, just a few things to work out still. Also, I know there's some rust on the drivetrain in the shock picture; my spring goal will be to find the best way to sand and coat everything under there...maybe a few quarts of POR-15 and a few wire brushes...and lots of TIME...we shall see.

As you can see I got the rack mounted up; love it, low profile but I think it'll be great for chairs, coolers, and firewood without killing the gas mileage like some of the larger racks with fairings.

How are you liking the bilsteins?

I just got mine installed today. Stockers from 2001 were still on there. The difference even after a few short trips is rediculous

No diving and much more composed and plush in corners and over bumps. Ill add some pictures to my build thread early in the week

I love them, huge difference. I had Bilsteins on my E34 as well as my E28 and I don't think I'll ever try anything else...ok maybe OME with a different vehicle someday. I still have a little play up front that I am tracking down, but these are a 400% improvement over the crappy Monroe Reflex's that were on there. The biggest difference is the stability in turns. Looking forward to your pictures.

Check ur center link for play in steering and i would recommended at least iab from calmini and brass bushings from for u local Guy bandit4x4 and u will feel alot of deference y don't u just join a local club where u can find out alot what cool mods that u can do to ur truck.....WWW.Nexterra.org

Mix-I signed up over at ClubXterra.org, I'm usually more of a lurker on forums, but this Expo site is addicting. I've read a lot of great info at Clubxterra over the past week or so. I'll be spending the weekend doing the plugs/wires/cap/rotor and checking out the suspension. We'll see how it goes...

Don't forget it's an "Interferance" engine! So make sure you do the timing belt change at or near 100,000. I personaly know a couple guys that did not and they trashed their engines.
It's not a difficult change to do yourself especially if you do with another that has done before and the kit is cheap. We always did the waterpump at the same time too.
We did so many we were really fast at it ;)
