Outlander trailer update

The suspension is the key to a good trailer foundation from my experience.

Before the Chaser, I had essentially given up on expedition trailers completely because of poor suspension design and lack of dampening. Torsion axles or leafs with no shocks require travel speeds on unimproved surfaces to be reduced too much and the trailer contents get destroyed from the vibration and impacts.

The Kimberly Kamper has a good suspension. I don't know what the Campa uses.

Of course I am pretty happy with my Chaser, but 12,000 miles in a year with no failures will do that to a guy ;).

:iagree: When looking for a trailer start with the suspension and work your way up. If you are not happy with how it tows or its off road capabilties (clearance, articulation, smoothness, etc) than you won't be happy with the rest of it!

CampaUSA uses leaf springs and shocks, all the South African trailer manufacturers I know of use this set up. It's usually paired with a mechanical surge brake on the axle but that story is for a different thread !

Leaf springs, while they don't offer the refined ride you get on a trailer of the quality of the AT, have the benefit of being very hard to break. And if you do, they are usually a simple repair in the field.

Good point!

Trailing arm suspensions are the STUFF! However, leafs are dead nuts reliable for the cost. And I can carry two spares for less than 60 bucks.

The campa uses a leaf spring design with 7 leaves per side on a 5,500# axle. Shocks and stabilzer arms are used to improve stability and ride, so it tows very well! Your right on having a good suspension on a trailer it is critical. It is an area that most skimp on but should be an area that gets a good portion of the design time and budget so it functions properly.

What campa and AT use are at theoppisite sides of trailer suspension. Both have their ups and downs but I would saythat both companies make a quality unit.

I'm going to go look at the trailers some time pretty soon and probably buy one this year. I'll put it to good use and good abuse and then report back to yahs.

When did you get yours?
I think I may have seen this one being built. It looks awesome!

Thanks for the kind words...I picked mine up in late July. We have used our Sherpa 8 times since then. Last trip was out at Beaver lake by Rogers two weeks ago...

Congratulations again!

Regards,

BWJ
