Because there's no other logical reason why anybody would question or *ridicule* somebody for choosing not to drive a truck on a class 4+ trail.

Please show me where I have ridiculed anyone for anything other than not putting thought into their modifications and then hiding behind the term "overlanding"?

You are correct, we've got signals crossed because of the various people stating different things here. I quoted your text because it's at least a reasonable basis for discussion, but some of my comments are directed towards others.

You are still wrong in thinking some must not have put thought into a modification just because they didn't come to the same conclusion as you, and also for not understanding that the idea of "Overlanding" does not mean the same thing to everybody, as it means to you. Some people research their routes to make sure they won't encounter something their more lightly modified vehicle can handle, and/or they would turn around and find another way if they did meet a surprise.

And again, as far as putting thought into modifications, were you aware that the RTE bumper is illegal in some places?

Of course it is Dan. We have known for a while :ylsmoke:

Now can you guys stop mucking up my thread, please? Start a new one about ARB vs. RTE if you want.

I appreciate all of the feedback Jack and others have contributed to this thread, and people should consider it when making their own choice. Trucks like Marc's, Steve's and Sinuhe's are set up for more serious trail use than I intend for my Disco. If you intend to have one vehicle for everything, and run 3+ trails with it, consider their route.

I like my ARB Bumpers and I like the Non-SRS ARB on my Disco. I certainly did not make the choice without considering all the options. Contrary to some of the photos shown, I have had great success with ARBs on a half-dozen trucks, and I am not easy on my trail, expedition or race vehicles. However, this is my first ARB on a Disco. I have seen and wheeled with plenty of RTE bumper and like them too, but I would not put one of the thin bumpers on my 1995, just as much as I would not put a stinger on my Unlimited Rubicon.

Party pooper. This thread has had a higher concentration quotable quotes then any thread in a very long time. It has kept me smiling all day with all the posturing, poseur call outs, insinuation, defensiveness and Easy E quotes. Boyz behaving badly, it’s been fun without being too Pirate. Now you’re gonna end the good times……bummer:coffeedrink:

Hey, don't worry about it too much guys, I was mostly joking. Those of you who know me, know how much I love this Disco, ARB bumper and all ;)

Scott with your dixon-bate did you make sure to install a backing plate with it on your ARB? I made my own for my shack mounting brackets but I should have just ordered them from EE b/c I think after the cost of cutting them down etc... it would have been cheaper just to order from them.

Yes, a big, thick one. EE sells a perfect one for that. It matches the profile of the Dixon-Bate base. You do need to cut the backing plate to fit on both sides of the bumper frame mounting plate. EE also sells the Dixon-Bate tow jaws.

I do not doubt the RTE is stronger, and clearly a better choice for extreme terrain. However, it certainly is not better for animal strike protection and I do not see improved winch visibility or access, for that I would need to spend some time comparing.

I think the part you are missing Scott is that the ARB's for a cruiser and the ARB's for rovers are not even near the same product.

I dont get it as the cruisers are very sturdy units compared to the disco's. I wheel with guys with cruisers with ARB's all the time as well as lots of disco guys with ARB bumpers. these are just not apples to apples in any way.

The Disco ARB bumper is flimsy IMHO and I would not run one.

I also have to comment on the animal impact part. I drive in areas that are so stinking full of deer that at some point you are going to hit one. I practice what I preach and I never react or try to avoid a animal as it is more likely to kill you then the impact with the animal. I have hit a few deer over the years and one really large one at highway speed (about 65mph) with my disco with the rovertym bumper. The deer ran straight out into heavy traffic glanced off a oncoming car and I hit it dead broadside in the center of my bumper. the only damage my truck had was a small crack in the plastic grill. The Rovertym with the exception of being covered in evicerated deer guts was not damaged in any way and the disco had no frame damage either.

I understand that ARB was designed for busting roos down under but that does not then dictate that they are better for animal collisions. I would think that if you were half way through a trip far away from home that a bumper that prevents all damage would be better then one designed to to fold up and absorb the impact. One other factor that we dont really hear about here in the states is that bumpers in australia are now required to have give in them to prevent pedestrians from getting killed in collisions with roo bars. I would not doubt that that some how has weakened the ARB design.

Larry, is anything learned when things are diluted to the point that all that is said is something to the effect of: "I like your truck"?

Craig, offer accepted. When are we going?
