Overland Journal Project Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4)

The Top Gear episode will air on June 10th.

Brute vs. FJ Cruiser vs. LR4.

Other than providing the vehicle and performing some precision driving tasks, we had no control over the storyline, commentary, etc. There is some beautiful camera work, but it is also a TV production. Just wanted to disclose that, as I can just envision the pending comments ;)

So, how rough of shape is the truck after you let Tanner launch it airborne? I was amazed that the Brute didn't flip in the same spot. Sure looked like it could have went in the video.

Not sure I ever really saw them say who the definite winner was other than getting to the river first. Seemed like the LR4 did a pretty great job. I was also impressed by the New Brute DoubleCab. Considering how large it is it took everything in stride.

The Brute was awesome! If they could get the cost down 50%, it would sell like crazy. The show is a little too obviously "staged" for my liking. Im sure the UK version is all setup too, but they dont try to make it look like "reality TV". LR4 won the sand climb. LR4 looked better going up Devils Staircase (but that win should probably go to Tanner's skills). What was with the stalls? LR4 definitely got most air!

Total damage was minimal.

Broken compressor mount on the water crossing (just one of the mounts. It didn't fall off)
Larger tires popped the fender flares off. Fixed with new plastic clips
Alignment adjustment
New windshield from a rock chip

These LR4s are tough. No notable damage at all, just minor stuff. Given how hard they beat that thing. The stalling was driver error. The whole concept of left foot braking was oddly foreign to Tanner... Trucks with low overall gearing and a lower stall converter can stall if you let them roll back on a climb. Even a JK automatic will do the same

The LR4 was the best in the cinders and on the staircase. In fact all of the trucks did the climb twice (for footage angles), and the LR4 cleaned the climb on the second run. Only truck to clean the climb. I attribute that to the independent suspension, wheelbase and those sticky Falkens

Thanks for the response Scott. Interesting to hear that things were not that bad on the truck. Tanner sure was pushing it hard.

I will say I did see some really nice pinstripes after climbing the stairs down the driver side. I'm sure they will just buff out.

Me too.
Did not enjoy it at all. Have watched 1 episode of US Topgear a few years ago and did not enjoy it. Last night was more of the same.
To see how 3 loud mouth guys abuse vehicles which they clearly did not buy themselves just did not do it for me.
