Overlanding Tires

I like the DT a lot, but they do not offer the size I want, 255/85r16. The KM2 does come in this size. Looks like my next set of tires is going to be BFG's KM2!

I have heard great things about the Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx.

I run the S/T Maxx. I have 70k on my set now, and they are not to the wear bars yet, but close. I am shodding a new set the spring on my new quadratec wheels. I love the ST MAXX, only wish they made a D load or even a C load rated version for the light weight jeeps.

KM2, they handle great on the road, and I haven't had any issues with them in the rain. Buy a set and you'll be a convert.

I run Cooper STT's and love em. They work great in all terrains. I know a few have suggested the KM2, but I've seen them in action and am not impressed. I wheel with a guy that has a set of them on his 4 door Rubicon, same size as I run. We're both locked front and rear and I've seen him spin his tires trying to climb something and fail that I've been able to climb. He's got a better approach angle than me, and the only real difference I see that would affect performance is the tires.

BFG KM2's are amazing... Durable 3 ply sidewall... readily available in most locations where you are likely to destroy a tire...
.
Bullchit, and bullchit.
.
I split two sidewalls in four months of ownership, then waited NINE MONTHS while my warranteed replacements (35x12-15s) were backordered. I missed an entire season of wheeling.
.
I know no tire is indestructible, but (A) Two in four months is pitiful. (B) Keeping a paying - no, a PAID customer waiting for nine months in unacceptable, and (C) Lying to that customer, assuring him every three weeks that "we're doing a run next week," is just despicable.
.
I finally gave up, sold my two survivors at a loss, and bought a set of MTZ's for the street, and LTB's for the trail. Which is what I should have done Day 1, if BFG didn't lie to me for nine months.
.
The last conversation I had with their sales rep, I told him that I'd retell this story every chance I got. And I am.

People complain about KM2's all of the time for having weak sidewalls, this was debated heavily over on the VOT thread. At the end of the day I think it comes down to individual experience, my partner ran KM2's aired down to 15 PSI without one issue the entire trip. I also run KM2's in a heavy truck and have had no such failures and I spend plenty of time in the rocks. The KM2 is a good tire, but if you want the strongest sidewall get yourself some MTR's.

Again, two in four months, under a 3200# XJ. No one else in our group had issues, only my KM2's.
.
But I was bothered even more by the customer "service" than the sidewalls.
.
Weak sidewalls + no inventory + nine months of lies = three strikes and you're out.

If you're worried about weak sidewalls, best not buy Duracraps. They are shredding sidewalls like they're made of papier mâché around here!

Cooper AT3's is what I am running in 285/70/17. Quiet in the road great on the trails/sand.
As my JK is a daily driver I appreciate the quietness. It was a toss up between the AT3's and Cooper ST Maxx and cant say I am unhappy.
Previously had Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ (incidentally they are made in Coopers factory). Great off road but after initial wearing in got noisy (not as bad as MT's) but noisy all the same.

No availability must be location specific or you got them right when there was a back order. The km2s are very easy to find in the west, any of the major tire companies have sets of them in all of their warehouses.
I air down to at least 15psi on my 35" km2s every time and haven't a single issue so far. Several areas with sharp pointy rocks, muddy trails with logs/sticks/rocks hidden. Pinched the tires down to the wheels many times, rock rash on the wheels etc and never blown a bead, damaged a sidewall or anything. I siped the center tread on this set and they work very well in rain (we get a ton of it) and ice/snow, wet rocky trails etc.
I had 35" km2s on my last truck with a cabover truck camper and it was amazing stable on windy mountain roads and passes with high winds.

But any tire can fail if you wedge them in sharp rocks. Don't blame you for switching due to customer service, but the km2s work well for SO many of us. I would go with MTRs if sidewall strength was my main or only concern but the km2s work very well for my all around use, lots of miles in all conditions.
