Acid#8 and Raptor liner is about your best bet for a DIY.
Acid#8 etches and bonds directly to most metals, aluminum included, and is the prescribed primer for Raptor.
It can be sprayed or rolled on, I prefer a foam roller as the stuff is noxious enough as it is.
My entire bed is done this way, including wheel wells, and is a combination of steel and aluminum.
The coating is holding up 100% so far.
