Painting Fiberglass

So I am going to paint the Wildernest. Does anyone have any tips? I pulled out all the glass and windows, it down to the bare shell. I will strip the wax off and make sure its all clean and dry etc..

Best advice. Follow the manufacturers recommendations. Talk to your paint supplier. They can tell you what the best primer will be, if it is needed. The real important thing will be to get ALL traces of wax off. Especially if any silicone based products have been used. These will keep the paint from adhering properly.

I use etch primer on fibreglass. I'm not sure if that's the best option but it's what I do.

Yup, after looking at a million cans of primer the only one that was recommended for use on fiberglass was duplicolor etching primer. It was 6.50 a can, and looks like it will be a olive green color. Kinda odd, but at least it will be easier to paint dark gray do to the contrast. Does anyone think it would weird to paint the canopy with hammer finish paint? I swear that stuff if way more resilient than regular paint. A bit more forgiving as well.

For painting fiberglass I used boat paint designed for that application. It wasn't cheap, but it has held up to extensive trail abuse. The specific product I used id called "Monopoxy" and I got it from West Marine.

I've used regular brushable Hammerite with a spraygun, instead of rattle can Hammerite, and got a much nicer finish. A nice satin mildly textured finish instead of the heavy hammered look.

I used the self etching primer, then sprayed on the Hammerlite. I was able to achieve a pretty nice finish, not as "hammered" as expected. It is more of a sandly looking metal flake that is smooth to the touch. I wet sanded it with 400 grit, then used a light polish, then wax. The dark gray color is nearly an exact match to the Nissan trim color. All I have to do is glue on a few windows then the bottom part of the Wildernest will be finished.
