Here is a chart of the things you should think about as you are composing your photo:

Soooo, what are these "other hobbies" I should consider? ;)

Dan,

You would do best to contact Mike directly at his site: http://www.michaelneilodonnell.com

But it's easy:

-- First identify all of the interesting sites within a 50 mile radius. Then visit them at sunrise/set and in all seasons to discover when the light will be best.

-- Then hike over trails and rocks in the dark to drag all of your gear into position.

-- Use a tripod, the right lens, and, perhaps, a neutral density filter.

-- Take a half dozen bracketed exposures, per "shot".

-- Dump the whole mess into the system of your choice and cull ruthlessly. (Mike uses Aperture which makes it easy to "stack" photo sets like this.)

-- Once you have the RAW's adjusted, use the HDR package of your choice to assemble the final image.

Finally, pray that you achieve the right effect and go more natural or more dramatic as required.

Me, I point and pray! ;)

Ok will do.
We are headed to Yellowstone and Montana in a week or so, and could use some tips to make our photographs pop
