Lol, I think I did that several times :)

Actually, Bob has a very good reason not to get a Mac, his home brew cataloging software. If it works, then I would not be in a hurry to change things. But, if it is getting long in the tooth, then Lightroom, or if you are really into an image data base, Aperture, would provide very viable alternatives. And while scholars can debate the use of adjustment layers, Aperture has implemented that very technology with "brushes."

While I have reasons why I like the tools I use, at the end of the day, no one looking at my images can tell if I used a Canon, Nikon, or Sony, a Mac or a PC, or Lightroom, Photoshop, or Aperture. And it is not my intention to start, as Rob put it, a bun fight.

People will, however, be able to form strong opinions of my skill as a photographer - which is why I ain't givin' up my day job any time soon.

For those who missed the last $9.99 offer (like me) I just got an email, it's on again, $9.99 for Lr and Ps. I'm tempted I must say despite my arguments against the concept. Trouble is that both need W7 or 8...bummer.

David Pogue points out that, with the new $10 a month rental pricing for Photoshop and Lightroom, you actually save money over the cost of buying the software up front.

Photoshop and Lightroom cost $700 to own, and upgrades cost $200 every two to three years. So figure $900 for three years. Renting at $10 a month for 36 months is $360.

The numbers are less attractive if you already own Photoshop. Then you have already paid the $700 entrance fee. One upgrade would be $200, versus the $360 to rent.

With the rental plan, you get the advantage of new features and bug fixes added several times a year, instead of waiting for three years. Plus Adobe gives you 20 GB of cloud storage to pass files around.

I have been using ACDSee 7 for a while and quite like it. AFAIK there's no way to import my custom database format though and I think there is with LR. That said I'm not doing any photography right now so I haven't really chased this up.
