Can you point me to the old (no longer in production) stock FJ with the following characteristics:

Body: Pickup
Engine: Turbo Diesel
Drivetrain: front- and rear-locker

What year and FJ series and year should I be looking at?

Hi - do you mean a 2003-06 HZJ 79...........?? I think thats the model code, from memory. Factory turbo 4.2 - 5 speed manual - factory lockers optional. Good units - bullet-proof, & more grunt than a wild pig.

What I have in mind is an iconic (read nostalgic and retro), low-tech (low maintainance), no fancy-bells-and-whistles (reliable), supremely capable in the rough stuff pickup, along the lines of the FJ40 or FJ70 series. Does such a creature exist in the venerable Land Cruiser dynasty?

Yeah you want a 70 series Ute. HZJ70 something... They truly are amazing trucks.

Cheers

FJ is for the petrol engine landcruisers. The diesels start with B or H.
The earliest turbo models are the BJ74 and the HJ61 which were introduced about 1985.
Other turbo models were availble in the 80 ,100 ,78,79 series.
What you can have depends on which country you are in and how they handle imports if they were not sold new there.

The older non turbo diesels can have an aftermarket turbo added if driven sensibly

Jonathan/TLC has a prototype FJ 45 pickup that can be built-up with a modern diesel, that sounds closest to what you're looking for.

Many of these trucks were sold to folks in the middle of nowhere who get the truck serviced by shadetree mechanics who do not like turbo's.

If you're looking for a factory turbo, good luck!

Here in Guatemala where, if you're not going up a hill you're going down one, folks still do not like turbos!

I will not own a diesel without a turbo and all of mine are aftermarket, either a kit or one I've put together myself.

Yeah, I'm pretty much convinced that I don't wanna touch any of the diesel engines that Toyota put in the 40 series.

I know about Guatemala's mountains. I was born and raised in Guatemala City, and used to cycle in Alta Verapaz.
