Spent a few minutes experimenting with my new studio lights two nights ago. Yeah, I know I look like a serial killer in this one but that was the goal.

This afternoon I spent a couple hours at my studio practicing a three light set-up with a model (my lovely wife, Melissa) against a white seamless background. This was the last image of the session, right before my son knocked over my camera and broke it. If you happen into our gallery while in Moab you'll most likely find Melissa at the helm as I'm rarely ever there. If you ever find yourself in town and you've just GOT to get your portrait or headshot done, we're available! ;-)

Do you have reflectors/diffusers/brollies, the light looks nice and soft so I assume so.

The two background lights have the standard 7" reflector attached. The main light has a shoot through umbrella attached to it. Not sure of the size - probably around 36". I want to get a large octabox for the main light.

Me either. About a month ago I started reading everything I could about using strobes. I bought a bunch of gently used strobes and miscellaneous studio gear from a gal who is moving to Ireland at a crazy good price. I fully expected it to be much more difficult to learn but I'm finding it to be relatively painless.

I highly recommend you read the basic tutorials on the the Strobist website to get started. I've got a long way to go but it sure is fun to be learning some new skills!

Nailed the lighting. I have never understood how to use a flash. It's on the list.

My wife graduated this weekend, receiving her Master of Science in Food Science. I took the rare opportunity to get some white in the photos during the prior weekend's icemageddon.

These are just as simple and impromptu as the 14 degree day allowed....

That's fantastic. Congratulations to your wife. That couldn't have been easy given the age of your kids. She looks great too :)
