To get there, from Los Olivos (near Solvang): an exceptional blacktop drive through farms, vineyards and finally those beautiful oak forests on Figueroa Mountain Road up into the high country of (... yes ;-) Figueroa Mountain and the huge forest area that surrounds that spot. Forest Ranger station on the mountain, right along the Figueroa Mountain Road route to the trails, and they have trail maps and good advice.
Several nice campgrounds. Awesome wildflowers in the spring. Lots of wildlife... who will want your lunch and expect to get it. Down below, it gets pretty wild in the vineyards too. Excellent wine country.
Easy to moderate trail system with more challenging stuff in the vicinity. Truly amazing views. California Condors occasionally; Sisquoc Condor Sanctuary is 30 miles east... but mostly you'll see raptors (even golden eagles) and vultures.
No big secret; everybody in the county knows about this place. Big picnic day area on the mountain, very popular. But the trails are not often crowded; you are in the backcountry of a farming region, and Santa Barbara and Santa Maria are the "Big City"... with 100,000 people each. So try not to choose a holiday weekend, and you will have solitude with great beauty.
Enjoy!
