I didn't at all recognize the FR Rack in it's unfinished state. I didn't know that was even an option.

Unfinished? Well, it has a paint which I would descripe as silver-gray-metalic that looks very close to aluminium.

Seems that the black safari version is more common, but I didnt like the black (to strong) and the rails around the rack would bring any benefit for my kind of use - only drawbacks

Ah, I thought it was raw aluminum. I think black is the only advertised option by US Distributors. I haven't seen any with side rails at all. Is it kind of like a hannibal rack?

Thanks man, just looked at your blog. I just picked up one of those badges as well, needs some work. But by the looks of your it is do-able.
 
On my favorite trail in the Sierras in the middle of the summer at 13,000+ feet on my way to my "top secret" fishing hole in search of goldens!
