It's really a cultural phenomenon that is indicative of "gotcha" journalism. A perversity that over shadows substance and replaces it with weighing importance on misdirection, subjectivity, and embroilment. It reminds me of AOL's "News" page or Homepage. Extremely atrocious
It costs us all really because the original subject matter rarely gets addressed and instead any creativity or information is replaced by gratuitous scorn and abuse. Often humor is used as a guise to conceal unnecessary disdain.
I know it exists on other international forums too so it isn't simply American however, Americans have an overwhelming endless aptitude for expressing themselves inappropriately. Either due to a lack of interest especially when on the internet or in an automobile where they feel removed, or merely due to the fact it has become acceptable in our society to injure others to make your point or as a defensive act to avoid having to suffer the anguish of saying something like "you're are right, I was wrong" or "I'm sorry"
It is also an example of extremism where people simply can't understand that there is more than just right and wrong. Much more. If you look at EE and read the discussion forums you can see a great deal of ridicule and pugilism. Making villains out of people for their choice of products or at times merely seeking advice.
Anyone with a little care would probably not want to business with people like that in order to avoid being at the receiving end of the kind of belligerence. Now contrast that with the reviews of OJ and you can see the adaptation of a new philosophy of inclusion not exclusion. A place that survives and operates based on member contributions.
Just look at the editors, photographers, writers, and producers. We have all had the privilege of conversing with an untapped wealth of knowledge because of it, for free!
That kind of access and willingness and time mind you set this place apart from all others. The lack of hostility testifies to that as does the gratitude and excitement behind the plethora of mechanical and vehicle modifications authored by members. A very intelligent crowd because of it. And though we have all had a few less than favorable moments everyone continues on communicating with one another. It's awesome
I think in the Locker thread below you see a testament of expo members try and avoid that kind of derision which isn't easy when using a linear form of communication like the internet.
But then again you can see incredulous remarks made in other threads on expo that continue to surprise me since they are made in a forum about exploring and traveling. Exploring and traveling have always held one thing in common; self-discovery.
How can you judge others so harshly when everyone who has stepped onto the road of adventure either in a canoe, an old beater, or a 6 figure rig knows that being witness to other cultures and exposure to unfamiliar places means reserving judgment and a haughty attitude. Who am I to tell you what the right thing for you is or how to live?
A little modesty would be nice although most travelers have a healthy amount of confidence. We all know arrogance just doesn't produce anything other than alienation and regret. There is just so much room for error in life and adventure
Clearly Expo is growing and will continue to evolve socially. I think a ventrilo or skype channel so people could discuss technology, trails, and news would be a good idea to form a more intimate community but I would not envy anyone who was the admin of something like that nor is it really necessary I suppose.
Not to brown nose at all but I think this place kicks azz. That requires not just involved members but attentive moderators with good judgment. It could be a very different place altogether but I like the direction we are going even if it costs us a post or two here and there to insure professionalism and respect
