OOXJ, your drawer unit looks great! What did you use for the material on the top of the unit and the bottom of the drawer?
Thanks,
Bob

Thanks Bob! It's coin pattern rubber matting that I ordered online. I like it because it gives the box a "finished" look and is extremely durable.

After admiring so many of these builds, and reading countless threads, I've gotten to the point where I'm still not sure what direction to go. I decided to go ahead and just put something together and learn what works and what doesn't. This is the start of the BETA version. At this point all I've got invested is a couple of sheets of 3/4 CDX, some cheap indoor/outdoor carpeting, some hinges and not as much time as I would have guessed (others could have done in half as much time as it took me to futz around).

I wanted to keep it somewhat modular so it wouldn't be too tough to take out for full use of the truck bed if i need. It's 3 modules, screwed together only to keep aligned. I built the carcasses right after I got the truck (very snug), then had Linex sprayed in, VERY snug now.

I'm still working on what to do with the wheel well voids. The truck bed is full of curves and strange little voids that will make trying to utilize those spaces interesting. I'll scratch my head for a while with these and probably put something together to finally find the errors of my ways.

General plan for now is to marry the truck up with a Sportz SUV Tent. Leave the tent as a base camp and then go explore. Part of that is a good solution for having a house battery to run a fridge that I can leave at the base camp. I may do a dual (both smaller) house battery system so I can still have lighting etc. within the shell for night lights or ?

I have learned so much from this site (although I bet my wife is starting to regret me finding it :).

The side areas are where I'm at a "gotta figure out something" stage. There's a lot of good useful space but between the strange radius's of the bed curving up and the oddball shape of the openings I'll need to crack a few beers to really get into design mode. I don't want to leave them open as the dog may travel back there at times and he would just fall into them along with anything else.

I have some very fuzzy mental pictures but just can't quite get them to come together - yet

My bed storage and sleeping platform

Here is mine. It has 6 flush mounted hatches, two doors, a removable divider, folding wheel well covers, and D rings mounted every foot and a half on either side to strap stuff to it.

Also, beneath each hatch a rubbermaid tub fits perfectly, and between the wheel wells and tailgate is where I store my water. Dadod into the wood are three 1x1 metal tubes spaning the width of the box, so even without the divider in the box doesnt sag under the 300lbs (two people laying down) it was tested with. The whole thing is held by two turnbuckles, so it is completely modular. This was designed off of many I found on this website, and I would like to thank all the great members of this community for the ideas!!!

Here's the start of my drawer/storage/sleeping platform build. This will house recovery gear and tools. Will only be accessible when the the tailgate is down for added security. Since, there's no locking mechanism on it.

Finally Finished

I finally finished my Platform and Drawer System this weekend. Having an FJ Cruiser has it's value, but there is certainly no room for storage. I needed something that would not only transport my gear, but had to be usable for my job as well. So, it started out with the platform a few months ago, then this weekend I added the drawer which sits on top and bolts down from the inside using hex bolts and T-Nuts. The drawer holds my samples for my job but when we are on our camping trips it holds the Snow Peak BBQ and Cook Set. Underneath the platform is a perfect spot for the Snow Peak IGT Tables and Legs. It then received a coat of Line-X and it's ready to take on any trip. Thanks.
