After about a year I can tell you The Smitty ones don't wear well. My driver side one is tearing at the top, and wearing out on the side where my Glock Rubs it. And the passenger side has sunfaded to a pale nasty Blue color from the original Black. ust my 2 cents

My experience exactly. They faded from tan to pink in about 6 months and the seams tore out. My wife sewed in reinforcements and that helped. The material is certainly NOT military grade stuff, but cheap chinese look-alike. I emailed their customer service and they did send me a new set but I never installed them - just gave them to the guy who bought my truck.

this is my 1st gen 4runner which came with the factory roll bar used to attach my rack

i had my interior rear rack for a while but i never liked how i had to strap stuff down on top. i would just put stuff on the rack and use bungee cord to hold it down but it takes to long to unhook and rehook once done. i been thinking for a while of a better way. strapping bags down to the rack and than just put what i want inside the bag. quick and easy access and i never need to strap anything down again.

my long gun bag has a molle system and it was exactly what i wanted to do. i been looking for a replacement rack that would fit my needs better. got really lucky and scored this sweet rack used for hanging shelves off of at a store that was closing and selling the display racks as well. its really nice metal and has a sweet design too it. ill let the pictures show it.

top is my old set up which i had for less than a year. the new set up has been on for less than a month and trail tested once. so far so good

So does the rack pull down on what looks like gas struts? Very interesting. Thanks for posting.

that was the plan but the gas struts are surprising strong lol. i afraid if i use a weaker strut it wont stay up on bumpy roads. i can access everything up top with no problems. i might use a weak gas strut and drill a hole to pin it so it stays up. im really just holding out on a set of electric control gas strut from the new rav 4 back door.

McMaster has a few locking gas struts

Not entirely happy with the finish, hopefully some of the un-eveness will fade over the next few weeks or so.

The basic design was similar to my original box, two drawers and a flip up side to provide access to my compressor in the wheel well. I decided to add a flip up door to the main compartment because I worried about losing access to my gear if my rear door was pinned closed.

It's all 3/4" maple plywood using Dennx's design as a basis. I haven't weighed it, but it sure is a lot heavier than my old one (~55lbs).

sweet drawer system. only reason i havent done one is the weight of them. much lighter if i keep all my stuff a ready to move bags.

Lookin' good Wes. I'm still on the fence on switching to a custom built side-by-side pull out cargo tray system. Each tray would have etrack tie downs and each tray would have a slide out table. I would use my Wolf Pack boxes for recovery and tool storage on one slide out tray and the fridge on the other. I think it would give me more versatility loading the cargo area with a fridge.
