We've used extendable painter's poles as we could not find cheap extendable dedicated tent poles. Worked like a charm all summer.

We got a deal on our Kelty Deluxe (< $100) with shipping. Costco was blowing them out at the end of the season a couple of years ago.

My brother-in-law builds these. They're not cheap but they've survived some of the worst weather I've ever seen. Snow, rain, killer wind, hail, etc.
