Post your camp coffee setup

Honestly, I think coffee will go south quicker than that. When I buy the good stuff (Stumptown), I notice a difference between the first pot and the last from the 12oz bag. I think that it starts to fade around a week out from opening the bag.

Yea, it can. It starts going south right away. By two weeks or so, it is completely flat -- and remember, that two weeks starts from the day it is roasted, not the day it was opened.

If it was packaged in the first day or two (while still outgassing CO2) in an air-tight container with a check valve (one-way valve), you have considerably longer because of the lower oxygen content of the container. Alternately, if it was flushed with nitrogen during the packaging process (after it stops outgassing), you achieve the same thing. Either one of these will give you a few months, possibly longer -- but once you open the container, you re-expose the coffee to oxygen, and you are back to your ~2 week window.

To add complexity, flavor is a bit subjective, and is related to the roast. Darker roasts lose some of the lighter flavors during the roast, so you can't lose those flavors due to oxidation -- they're already gone. So in theory (I've never tested this, so it is speculation on my part), darker roasts may last a bit longer than lighter roasts, before going south. Has anyone ever put "old" coffee side by side to compare how each roast survives? It would be interesting to see . . .

The REAL way of making tea.

This is how my tea got made when I was staying at a friends farm in southern Zambia, while I was looking for my own land. No fancy stuff, just Mopany wood to make the fire, VERY hard and hot burning wood.

This setup doesn't take up much room (motorcycle):

This is the other setup for when I have a little more room to spare (truck):

Starbucks VIA, Whisperlite stove, GSI Kettalist and whatever cup is clean.

Same here, but I don't worry about a clean cup. My cup has a lid so it stays clean and just dump out whats left before putting it way.
Maybe a rinse if it had soup in it. The medium via is best and for creamer I just use a teaspoon of whiskey:coffeedrink: It works too.

How do you like this setup?? Anybody else have one?? Just ordered one for GF's Valentine present.......:victory: I'm always thinking of her first!!Tehehe.

I like it because I really like drip coffee and most times want more than a cup. Two things though ... takes more than the 10 minutes it says on the box (about that long after the water heats up) and remember to keep some water where it won't freeze so you can make the coffee as soon as you are ready...

You have learned a good lesson to keep GF happy first, IMHO. :coffee:

I've had one of those for a couple years now as well, works perfectly. My only fear is the glass carafe breaking if improperly packed on a rough trail, then no coffee!

I've had one for a few years; got it on clearance at Walmart for $20 and paid too much. It works but it is S L O W and heavy.

I now just use a 120v one plugged into an inverter. Much happier!

AERO press & SS espresso pot. We brew up in the AM, coffee up & then off to do what ever. We always keep a Pocket Rocket or MSR Dragonfly mulit-fuel on hand to do the cooking as it generally easier that using the propane range.

Black tea, with sugar & soy later in the day is wonderful as well.

Here's my set up... I got a lot of the gear from my father.I use the ole fashion perculator coffee maker. It works surprisingly well.

That 3 burner stove has the Coleman fuel tank also. It was really beatdown and I've been working to restore. I was using the propane set up on this trip. I still have to get a new generator assembly for it. I broke the last one trying to get it off.

Yep, I use one of those plastic melita things from the grocery store. I have a couple, one for the car kit and one for the motorcycle (gone now). Very light and cheap, easy to pick up a replacement.

My biggest problem is I'm still trying to find a light saucepan with a lip. I don't want to cary a kettle just for boiling water. If I could find a small pan with a lip that I could use for cooking as well I would be in great shape. Of course I'm cheap and get most of my cooking stuff at marshalls type places.

I found a cool pot gripper thing at marshalls last year. This allowed me to take the handles off my saucepan and my frying pan. Saved alot of space those handles are a bit wasteful.
