Post your Nissan Camping Pictures!

Here are a couple shots from my last Death Valley trip in March 2013. I also have a Defender 90, but prefer the Nissan for long trips like this one, almost a thousand miles one way just to get there.
The first was taken at a very nice camp spot in Hidden Valley, with the sun just setting behind us, and the moon just coming up over Hidden Valley.
The second shot shows the mounting of the tent on the bed rails, taken just before our Lippincott descent.

That is an ARB rear bumper! How'd you manage to get one of those?

When I bought the Nissan back in 2007, I went looking for the usual suspension, protection, and recovery mods. I found little, but did spot all the nice things ARB was doing in Australia for the Navara, so called my friends up at ARB. Just coincidentally, they were looking to offer some product for the US Frontier, but didn't have a Frontier available, so asked if I would let them use my truck to test fit the Australian Navara products. They started with the springs and shocks, and over the period of a year or so, progressed through the front and rear bumpers, and eventually the skid plate set.
Some products bolted right up, and others needed some minor modifications. The frame horns differ between the rest-of-the world trucks and ours because of US crash requirements, so new front mounts had to be designed. The frame horns also affected the bumper to front skid plate filler panel by a fraction of an inch. So, the front frame horns are really the only difference between our Frontier and the Navara. Later, I ordered a set of Escape Gear seat covers from South Africa. They had never sold any in the US for a Frontier, so asked for interior photos and some measurements, and we found that the interior is an exact match as well.

That's pretty awesome.

Is there a planning thread ? We like to mix up some mild offroading with exploring/historical stuff and hiking

No not yet. I honestly haven't started planning it yet. I am going to try and get the basic route planning started soon, as I am most likely going to be starting school to expand upon my EMT cert this Jan. What I am hoping to accomplish with my trip is mild offroading, camping, exploring the Allagash Ice Caves, checking out the abandoned locomotives, visiting the B52 crash, and climbing Mt Katahdin. Obviously there will be more smaller hikes and what not thrown into the trip. I just need to sit down and outline all the objectives, figure out a realistic time frame, do some research, put together a solid plan of action and then present it.

More info on the ARB you've got, please ... that's not the standard bumper for the '05 & up Xterra, is it the Frontier bumper?

... looks like a great time, with that setup.

It's from a 2000 Grand Cherokee, got it for $200. I had to modify the mounts and reshape it at the wheel well openings but it worked out really well in the end.

Nice! I agree that it seems to have worked out well (nice job), I think it looks better than the 'standard' 2nd Gen ARB bar.

See you've had a couple different types of RTTs. What's your preference and what features work well/not so well for you??

Hi

Much prefer the Autohome Airtop currently on the truck than the ARB style that was on the trailer. It's way faster and easier to open or close, the quality difference is obvious but unfortunately so is the price. I bought mine used so didn't have to give up my entire arm ;)

Also, the ARB style is very noisy in high wind, noisy enough to keep my neighbors awake while the Airtop is way quieter.

A good friend with the same tent I used to have made the mistake of trying my newer tent. His tent is now for sale...

Cheers!
Mr. D
