Patience...might pay off.

Alright, have just been searching every day here and stumbled into one that isn't listed, but found through a friend. Patience is a virtue right!?! I always appreciate everyone's input on potential purchases!!!

They are starting off at 4K, but most likely will take between 3200/3500. Here are the details I was forwarded.....

  • 91 Montero (1st Gen)
  • 250K+/- miles
  • Current with registration and inspection (due again in Nov.)
  • Engine sounds smooth and strong - starts easily.
  • Exterior is fair shape, some minor dings and back bumper is slightly bent, paint is ok but lots of little chips and swirls, roof is down to primer in some areas - very little rust (was originally in CA)
  • Frame appears to be in good shape - no major rust
  • Interior is okay shape - door inserts torn, but can probably be fixed easily. Torn drivers seat and some small holes in upholstery, but generally okay. I will include front seat covers.
  • Super awesome suspension drivers seat.
  • Dash in good shape - will include new double DIN radio to install I have already installed new wire harness- alpine speakers in back
  • Tires have good tread but needs new spare
  • electric windows work but some of the door handles don't in back
  • sunroof does not open (elec. or motor issue - could be an easy fix)
  • rear gate auto lock does not work - had short so disconnected (just use key manually)
  • all other elec. seams to work okay - lights, blinker, etc.
  • all new brake cables and brake lines - brakes work great.
  • coolant system cleaned and flushed.
  • new timing belt and valve gaskets.
  • steering is loose as it need front end work, but drives fine even on highway - perfectly safe, just loose - I drive my son in it.
  • Will probably need new shocks, but drives fine, you just feel the bumps.
  • slight leak when you fill the tank between the fill pipe and tank, maybe a few ounces when you fill up the tank.
  • AC blows but is not cold, may just need Freon.

I don't get where people think these rigs are worth that much. It's a Mitsubishi people. One of the reasons I love buying and working on them is because they are cheap. $4k is about double what I would pay on a good day after a few beers and if it was a friend's truck. Realistically, $1500 for that rig with the issues it has. It's a 25yo truck with a usual end-of-life amount of mileage. The AC system may need more than a recharge. Seals could be bad. Compressor may not even be working properly. Huge possible can of worms. However, it could be great for what you want at the right price. I get markets vary as does availability. Here in SoCal Montero's are plentiful and in various stages of disrepair, but can be had for cheap. For $4k I would expect either little to no quirks with recent engine/trans rebuilds, or a ton of off-roading extras.

I concur. All the 'little' electric gremlins with switches and motors made up huge chunks of my parts dealing when The Montero Ranch was strong with the Force.

I'd offer no more than $2K for that. Needs tires, too.
