Practical Use....

Considering picking up a 1st Gen 4runner roll bar to mount in my 3rd Gen.

I'm just wondering how many 3rd Gen 4runners on here have one installed and what all do you/have you used it for? Thinking of mounting my shovel to it.

Any disadvantages?

I still don't see much of a use for one. Seems they just inhibit the small amount of space we already have in the rear.

I dislike mine in my 1st gen. If I ever take out the rear seats, the rollbar is going with them, it gets in the way.

I bought one for that purpose, but now I have a 95. Still considering it, but not sure. I was thinking for more crush resistance in the event of a roll for my kids.

I have one. Serves as a great clothes hanger in the rear while getting changed, as welll as a usefull bungee point for hanging all sorts of things. I have been trying to figure out if i can hard mount any equipment there though. Shovel sounds like a winner. Also mine will serve as a support for a shelf/ drawer system soon.

I wouldn't take one out of a 1st gen, primarily for aesthetic reasons and you can mount stuff to them. However, whatever you mount to the bar can become hazardous to your back seat passengers in the event of a collision.
I had a jeep in college that was T-boned. We would have all walked away except that my friend hit his forehead on the fire extinguisher on the roll bar. I am glad it wasn't the spade side of a shovel!

The spade of the shovel would be pointing down.

I re read my post above. To clarify, I like how the bars look in a 1st gen 4runner, and would only take one out if I were to add a full cage to it.

and yes, spade down.
