I know you are planning to use a quadrajet but have you checked out the new FITech 2 barrel fuel injection systems? They look like the ultimate electronic fuel delivery systems for an inline 6, makes me want a 292 in my blazer now!

You're scaring me. How did you know I was planning on that? My goals for the truck were always simple, cheap, and reliable. The FiTech unit fits the bill perfectly. I like how the ECM is built into the unit. 4 wires and you are good to go. A carb is low tech but I think the benefits of the EFI out weigh the simplicity of the carb.

You posted a while ago that you were planning to use a quadrajet! And a carb is low tech but FITech stuff is pretty close to as simple as you can get and still have the benefits of computerized fuel management!

I want to offer you another option for EFI that may lend itself to better drivability.

Problem you will run into with 4bbl EFI bodies is the injectors. With twice as many injectors you will be operating at the bottom end of the injector slope most of the time. Most injectors are not very linear when it comes to short pulse times. Going with the 2bbl design will move you up farther up the pulse time slope for the same amount of fuel delivery as the 4bbl.

I am tired of getting 10 mpg from my 460's so I am building an obscure inline 6 motor modified to use newer parts so I can get 11 mpg.

A glorious 10% improvement!

I can't mock it though, since we're now spending $460/mo to 'save' $150/mo in fuel expense.

I'll warn you off of Quadrajets though. Strong carbs but the design is a fuel-leaking mother. Their drill-thru-the-bottom design* has plagued me all of my adult life ('73 Firebird, '85 C-10). Better to get an Edelbrock equivalent, their bowl and body design can't leak like a Quadrajet does.

* quadrajet manufacture includes holes drilled up thru the bottom of the body as part of the primary metering system. The bottom holes are then plugged / "sealed". After many miles / duty cycles, the plugs start to leak, a nice fat sporadic drip drip drip down the intake, destroying your idle and emissions. You have to remove and partially disassemble the carb base to grind clean and re-epoxy these plugs. Every few years / 20-30k mi.

I agree the q-Jet has issues but it can do very well. The leaking issues are well known and once sealed up we would build a wall in the float area and mount the carb on the manifold backwards. This actually made it one of the best off road carbs we ever ran and handle inclines much better than any other carb.
So if you don't want to spend money on the EFI this is a good alternative.
