The tank is indeed close to the catalytic convertor, BUT: The cat itself is enclosed in a heat shield. There`s another heat shield on the tank, so it`ll be fine. The engine will be covered like this:

First i mounted the tank and seat:

Then i started with some sheetmetal:

Here`s the missing update. First i finished the right hand side sheetmetal mount:

Then i plumbed the fuel pump and filter:

Welded the sprockets:

A long list to work:

Clutch pedal:

Windshield and gauge cluster:

Then the fun begins. All that electrical crap has to go in:

Everything plugged in. I`m going to clean that up tomorrow:

Then i could start it, as seen on the video. It runs fine, except of some leaking oil. I`ll have to take a look where it comes from tomorrow:

Then i started with the temporary brake steering:

The list looks a lot better now:

I`m going to test drive it tomorrow. Can`t wait to see what works and what not...

Steinez, you absolutely have to post vids of your first test drive. The whole project is looking sooooooo cool, and I love the sound of the exhaust system. When is the date of the offroad event at the end of May that you want to take this beast to? Cheers, Chilli.:ylsmoke:

Have you ever seen a motorcycle or a scooter? Have you ever seen one exploding? You know where the gas tank is on those things, don`t you? There`s absolutely nothing dangerous about that...

Here`s the Update about the last 3 days. First i finished the second drive sprocket :

Then i made the track tensioners:

And put on the first track:

Then it was time for the first drive. So i put it in gear, sat in the drivers seat, pressed down the clutch and started it. Unfortunately the clutch didn`t work, so it started driving and i was going in direction of our wintergarten. Luckily i could kill it just before i hit something...
So the next day i put the transmission apart und fixed the clutch:

Then i kept testing it, and shortened the tracks to the right size:

It wouldn`t work, so i put on some guides:

Then it really started to work. I could drive a bit and the tracks wouldn`t come off. Unfortunately one of the screws punctured a tire when we wanted to take some videos. But i got it on video when the tires was punctured and how i drove back into the shop:



So i`m going to buy some rubber wheels or try to put some foam or something in the ones i have. Any suggestions?

Perhaps threaded sleeves over the bolts. If the sleeves could be lengthened as much as possible so they are up past the tires to the lip of the rims (if there are no obstructions).

Very creative but major issues...I forsee broken shafts at the welds, tracks jumping, roller chain breaking and tracks breaking. Drive sprockets are not going to last long.

Based on your experience with ....?? Broncos? If you have experience from Tuckers/Thiokols/Sprites even Argos (full of chains) etc you might mention it.

I'll admit it looks like the bolts as track-guides will be an issue, it was mentioned waaaay back in the thread, and clearly he already had a puncture - but "roller chain breaking"? Why. "tracks breaking"? Based on what? I can't even tell how he spliced the ends of the tire treads but I've seen tires used successfully as tracks before, so it would have to be his splice that fails. Have you spliced tracks a lot and have a better method?


It would have been fun to brainstorm with him back before he bought the first stick of tube, but now at this point Steinbruchsoldat has put a lot of time into this, and it's too late to change much, he's committed to driving and testing it now - we'll all learn from it because he chose to share, even if we learn what NOT to do, it's a contribution to the general fund of knowledge.

Funny that i already typed a post about a new track design when i noticed your post. I decided to ditch those tracks today and come up with a better design. But, there`s no reason to change anything else than the drive sprockets. Nothing else is lost...

So, here`s your chance to brainstorm with me. I really hope you guys come up with some great ideas. Here`s my originally typed post:

Ok, so i started thinking about some real tracks today. My favorite would be the snowcat style. Some conveyor belt, u-stock and grousers on the inside. I could make the front ones a bit wider, and the rear ones almost as wide as the car. This would help to reduce ground pressure...

The only downside i see is that it`ll be a pain in the *** to make it, and that i can`t drive on the street with this style tracks...

Would be nice too hear some thoughts...

I'd try hard to find tires of a diameter that allows you to avoid splicing. Worn, smooth car radial tires would be easy to source, replace belting for cheap, and with you planning to bolt on a grouser the tread is irrelevant.

I don't have a good inexpensive option for non-steel grousers yet - but I'm thinking ............
