Project "Oscar" 5spd D1

Alright, so I've been out of town and working lately and haven't had much time to get back to updating things here.

The intake and valve covers are off, the radiator is out, all are getting hot tanked tomorrow and cleaned up. New gaskets will go in and everything will be MUCH cleaner in the engine bay. When it goes back together most every hose is getting replaced as well as all the maintenance items.

I took the sway bars off since I won't be needing them. They will be going on the 98 which is going back to stock...and it didn't have sway bars when I got it so it works out.

The 98 also had a u-joint converted rear driveshaft which I will swap over with the rubber jointed driveshaft.

Hopefully over the next two days or so I will have all the suspension swapped between the two. After that there won't be a whole lot left to do that is pressing....since the 98 is getting put up for sale.

These (hopefully) will be the most productive days I've had with the rovers in a while. But with my luck something will come up and I won't get to finish :p

More pics will be on the way.

Agreed... You're either a manual person or not, BUT if you ARE a manual person, you'll never be happy with an Auto. To me it's a BIG thing that I'll never be happy without. Add to that what I've seen happen to trucks with autos that couldn't get off the trail and frankly I feel all that much better about my love of manuals.

That DI looks SWEET. I like the color too. I'm headed out to Idaho to look at a 95 5spd DI (white) this weekend. I can't WAIT to drive it cause I've only ever driven Automatic Discovery's and, well, I don't care for them at all. I think the manual will change that though, I like the trucks, but I like shifting too and I think the 5spd will really "wake up" a fairly underpowered truck (sure makes a difference in my 1st Gen 4Runner eh)

How does it feel compared to your 98 Auto??? Is it a truck changer??? Oh I can't WAIT to drive the truck I'm going to see...

Cheers

I don't know how others feel, but for me the 5spd is a HUGE difference. Completely different feel. You will be pleasantly surprised, I promise.

Here are some pics of how nasty the top end of the engine was before dismantling it and cleaning it up:

The intake manifold and valve covers are off and are in the process of being cleaned up. Should be going back on tomorrow if I have time. I'll get some new clean pics of everything.

The intake horns remind me of a classic webber twin choke set up with the velocity stacks like you would find on a 60's V-12 Ferrari.

Looks like a good start Jordon, I need to do the same with mine.

Yuck!

But that is 16 years of road grime and fluids accumulating. I am sure she will look and run much better when she, or should I say he (Oscar), is buttoned back up. :smiley_drive:

That is a great color by the way.

I am still kicking myself for passing up a '95 disco 5-spd with 85k miles last year.... but don't get me wrong, I love my 2001 Range Rover.

not to hijack, but 4Rescue, can't wait to hear your thoughts on that 95 disco in Idaho...

I am really glad I sprung for it...though (financially) I probably should have passed on it. Hopefully things will work out the way I have planned and all will be well.

So it's only been what, 7 months since I updated?

It's running. I drove it today for the first time (this summer was hectic or I would have had it done much sooner). But after the inaugural drive the alternator decided to take a crap. Lovely.
I did pick up a Black&Decker inverter for it as well as some other little things along the way that will be installed after all of the normal operating systems are back to tip top shape. Still lots to do, hopefully it won't be 7 months before I show up again. :p
