kenallwine Posted: I just don't like the idea of having on the roof rack.

I'm working on a propane tank mod that will be up on top of our Jeep roof rack (Garvin Wilderness). I'll be using a Manchester DOT horizontal aluminum tank. I'm waiting for the brackets to be welded up and powder coated. I'll try to post the mod when its completed.

What kind of roof rack do you have?

The reason I ask, you might be able to do the same thing to your Jeep.

I have a Gobi Ranger. I would be interested to see what your mount looks like. Are you using the 20# forklift tank?

Sorry I don't have any pics yet, I'm waiting to get the bracket back from the powder coat company. I can explain the bracket, its easy enough. I'm using black Core-Trax rails across the floor of the roof rack. On the rails, I'm using four Core-Trax Studs to bolt an aluminum flat plate down. The aluminum plate is 16" wide x 20" long. You could get by with a smaller flat plate, but I needed the rails 16" apart for another reason. The plate will have four verticle bolts permanently mounted to the plate to fit the hole pattern of the horizontal propane tank feet/legs. All you need to do is lift the tank up on top of the rack, slide the feet on to the verticle bolts and spin on some wing nuts.

I live in Quebec and I've been looking the last few days at the regulations for transportation of fuel and propane.

Quebec regulations on Fuel

Roads (Fueld and Propane
Maximum 150 kg (330 pounds)
Maximum container weight: 30 Kg (66 pounds)

Tunnels
Fuel: 30 Liters
Propane: Maximum 2 bottles of a capacity of 46 liters

Ferries
Fuel: Maximum 25 liters
Propane: 2 Bottles and a total of 65 liters.

Transportation of Propane: It's illegal to carry propane inside a vehicle unless the space in which it is carried is properly ventilated from the outside. A bottle carried on the outside rear of a vehicle must be protected by extending the bumper using a material that has a resistance equal or greater than the bumper. Propane tank can not be carried on the top, anywhere past the front axle and it may not extend outside the sides of a vehicle.

Alan,
Just wondering if you have made any progress on your tank mount. I'm thinking of going with the Manchester Tank 10# Horizontal.

Were you able to find a good price on your 20# tank online?

No I haven't, I'm still waiting on the guy who is welding up the brackets. He is welding up several different types of brackets for us, to be able to mount different gear on the rack. I called him yesterday, no problems just back logged (They are worth the wait, they do GREAT work) :sombrero:

No, I got a fair price-purchased locally. The reason I went with aluminum was weight (Going on top of the rack). I'm sure if you look around on the web, you'll find a better price than I paid. I also have a Manchester 10lb. aluminum vertical tank mounted on front tray of our trailer. If weight isn't a concern, Manchester also makes a 20lb horizontal DOT tank in steel. You might be able to save some cost with steel vs. aluminum.

I'm glad you found a tank you can use, looking forward to see your tank bracket idea.

I built a tank mount that fastens to the back of my 110 that is similar to the South African style bottle mounts. Unfortunately, they only fit european tanks, not US tanks. You can see it in this picture with a 10lb upright tank.

Kenalleine,

Sorry it took so long to post the pics of the propane tank rack mod.

I used Core Trax and Core Trax Studs, bolted to a 1/2" thick x 2" wide flat aluminum bar stock,
cut to length and bolted down. The tank is held down with stainless steel bolts, ss. lock washers & ss wing nuts.

No, Manchester Tanks are available in horizontal cylinders w/legs. The tank I used is a Manchester Tank number 9061TC.1 20# DOT Horizontal ACME/OPD (Aluminum) Marine Cylinder. Click Here: Manchester Catalog Note: Page 12

Note: Horizontal (Steel) tanks are also available on page 5 of the catalog.

The Manchester horizontal tanks are designed to be mounted and used in a horizontal position, but are to be filled in a vertical position.
