Proud Papa of My First Large Prints

I have a friend that lives in page Arizona and he wanted 4 large prints of some of my photos of the area. When I say large these are two 20X30 and two 40X60 canvas gallery wraps. Two of the images were crops of images taken with my old 50D so these started out down around 4.5MB. After researching how to do this I settled on up resing software that used to be called Genuine Fractals but is now marketed as Perfect Resize 7.

This was a stressful process for me since I had never done this before and canvas wraps at that size through Bay Photo are a significant investment. Well both the Perfect Resize software and Bay Photo came through for me and my babies were delivered to the client yesterday. His reaction to the final product was "Gorgeous" and "In your face awesome". :victory:

Bay Photo wants the print images at 300DPI (I know some folks say that is not necessary) so Perfect Resize first took these images up to almost a Gig in TIFF format and the final JPG file size was over 90MB.

It still amazes me that the software can up res an image that much and still maintain excellent quality.

Bottom line is, if you need really large canvas prints the Perfect Resize software and the Bay Photo canvas wrap product will give you excellent results.

That is great! I always admire your photography!

The largest I have done of my work is 12x36 and 16x20. I will have to look into Perfect Resize for the future.

Who did you get your canvas print through? Let us know how it turns out.

Here are the photos they chose. You can see the mirror image 2" borders that are wrapped around the 1 1/2" frame and visible on the sides.

Thanks again Beau. The Toroweap image is one of my favorites. To me the others of Lake Powell from Alstrom point are not my best work but since they live by Lake Powell they wanted to bring the local landscape views into their home. The client is always right.

That's great Brad!

I myself have been satisfied with Lightrooms resampling output with A1 and A2 prints but I find beyond that it's pushing the limits of smaller res shots too much. I tried one A0 print with an older shot and didn't like the result, there was too much false "mushy" detail added that was evident on close inspection.

A2 and A3+ is as big as I typically print because of resolution limitations so it's great to hear that you were satisfied with the Perfect Resize software. I may have to give the free trial a test run.

If you pixel peep zoomed way in you do see some added mush that I was concerned about but in the actual print it looks great. The client also thought the results were very crisp even when viewing a foot away (which is right in your face at 40X60).

You've convinced me. :sombrero: I'm downloading the software now and am going to try a test print on my Epson. Thanks again for your input!

Your welcome. Let us know what your impressions are once you have played with it a bit. From what I found in my research Genuine Fractals (now Perfect Resize 7) is the leading choice by many pros and processing labs for up resing.

Here are couple snaps from the client showing the larger prints on the wall. :wings:

BTW, he used a color enhancement option on his point and shoot camera to take these. He said the color is not really as intense as they appear in these photos.

Thanks.

We are a little backwards here but after this experience my wife and I plan to order a large canvas print and couple medium metal prints for our own home.

It would have been a lot less stressful if we had seen the final product first before committing someone else's money to an unknown result. Just saying.

Trevor,

Seriously, bring your test results and feedback on the Perfect Resize 7 software back into this thread. Other than my own personal excitement about having large prints purchased I would like to continue the discussion on what the best software is for up resing photos for large print.
