Pulling diff gears from Gen 2 SR

When you say "heavy", how heavy? Surely I can bench press this thing and let 'er down from the truck? I've dropped diffs before from a number of cars, a couple of 'em being big rear end pumpkins from V8 Mercedes and BMW's, with big gears, flanges and casings intact.

Won't be able to use an impact unfortunately, will be on hand tools only.

Any photos out there of what exactly I need to come home with?

I saw a variety through Google but not sure which is correct.

Do I need the front axle setup with locating arms, spring, etc?

And will the 3rd for the rear include the front part of the housing and flange, or just the gear assembly?

Ok here are some I found on Google.

1st picture is what I believe I need to come home with for the rear.

2nd pic is what I hope I do NOT have to bring home for the front axle...

3rd pic is what I hope I need from front axle, since it is smaller and lighter.

For the rear you will also need the Axle (driver side I believe) assume that you already don't have a locker? Assume you already have a 9.5" rear housing? Why not grab the whole thing - Wheel to Wheel? For the front I'd grab "photo 2" plus the CV shafts. If you are only looking for gears and plan to ditch the rest of the stuff and swap into your existing housings, then grab the minimums.

What size tires are you running? If you are up around 33" have you thought about finding 4.9 ratio gears from a sport?

Yeah I have a '99 with winter package, so I have a rear locker and the large ring gear.

I'm currently on 31's but I want to go to 33's. I thought the 4.9's would be tough to find.

4.9's are definitely obtainable without much extra effort. Seams there are a lot more Montero Sports in wrecking yards. 2001 to 2004 M.S. with 3.5l

I'm considering this very thing along with the OP but I'm afraid of the mileage hit and highway manners. What's the real world difference (not just RPM difference at a given speed) between 4.63 and 4.90 when running 33s?

Right, but the SR's 4.6 rear end with locker is a straight drop-in, right? With the Montero Sport's 4.9 rear end, I'll need to have everything disassembled and re-assembled using my locker, won't I?

You'll need to remove the 4.90 ring and pinion from the sport's diff and have them set up on your carrier.

Correct.... 4.6(36) will drop straight in if you already have a locker

Thanks, that's a useful spreadsheet, but I was hoping for more than just stats. Is there a noticeable drop in mpg? Is it buzzy on the highway? Is the acceleration worth it? You know, seat of the pants kind of stuff.
