Purchased an Expedition G Wagen

Yes, those Europa G500's are pretty sweet. Same power plant as the later G500/G550 but older style interior and manual transfer case. It is my Gwagen model preference, only 350-360 of them brought in and who knows how many are left. Service and parts are not as simple as the more modern trucks, but they are typically enthusiast owned and well maintained when they come up for sale. When I bought my 300GD in 2000 these were the insanely expensive new Gwagens that I had only a hope of owning one day. Amazing what happened to values in the 2008 gasoline price spike and simultaneous economic contraction. So after happily poking about in an old diesel for 8 years, I now utilize a bit more than my share of resources with the big V8. The Mercedes sales people in Europe call it a "luxury tax." Of course the level of taxation is driver dependent.

Indeed. I didn't know that about the quantity of Europa G500s imported. I'm gaining an increased appreciation for them, especially after driving one. I'd heard comments about the notable fit and build quality of the pre MBUSA units and I can say that they are indeed a thing of quality. The camper is an awesome vehicle unto itself, but the driving experience of the G500 is something special. I've officially joined you as an enthusiast.

You guys are killing me with those images! Okay, maybe portals for G-ronimo (I've been eyeballing them since I bought it and they would be beneficial). Serious $$$$ but....

The Boss actually wants something a bit smaller than the 33.5" tires on the 500. I'll likely do 32" BFG AT's seeing they are so nice on the highway.

Talk directly to Wolfgang Tibus at Tibus Offroad/Killer Axleshttp://www.killeraxles.com/html/mercedes_g1.html

There's even a white G-Ronimo look-alike already on Tibus portals, so you don't even have to try to visualize what it'd look like, it's already here;

What do you figure the differential clearance is on that vehicle - 17" or 18"? I like everything about it except the tiny windows on the camper. It looks great but in practice big operable windows are nice, especially in the desert southwest.

Look at those wide fender flares and how the relatively narrow tires are even with them; reveals the added width associated with the portals.

Awesome G camper!

I couldn't say what the diff clearance is with the bolt on portals but over on Pirate 4x4 I've seen pic's with a five galon paint bucket under the diff!!!

William, my good man!

I can understand if you go crazy on those portals and a set of bead lock wheels for G-Ronnie! Even if you don't, you have a rig which need not envy anything out there! Enjoy it in good health, my friend!

i will read through more carefully what's happened to G-Ronnie shortly. I've been off line, but I'm back for a while, at least.

keep on overlanding!
