Good article - thanks for sharing - I clearly need a lot more education before I could take this type of trip on.

As an aside, we just returned home from a 4000+km wander around Central Europe in a Mercedes C class Combi diesel/hybrid. I was amazed at the range - 1500km! We wwere using 5 L/100 km of diesel (90 mi/gal).

in an electric (coal) powered
Here in BC that electricity is hydro powered with dams, zero coal involved. The Columbia River Treaty between the USA and Canada over 60 years old is the power of positive thinking.

Ir provides massive power generation and it also provides flood control.

Unfortunately it destroys Salmon spawning in the rivers it affects. It might be one of the worlds biggest hydro projects.

We need to switch up the rhetoric.... and rather than assume ALL electricity is the result of burning coal.... we need to ask how do we eliminate coal from the mix. Solar, wind, hydro, are just a few of the options. I would love to see the critics of coal powered Hummers trade their Smart Phone for a gasoline powered version.... like the original Maytag washing machine......

Almost everything we use today is powered by electricity and we love every one of them. As we will love electric transportation..... The London Tube running on electricity was built before the internal combustion engine was even invented.
