Rear Carrier Bumper for '03 Taco

Does anyone know of a rear swing-out, tire carrying bumper for the '96-'04 taco that allows the use of the frame mounted 2" receiver? All of the customs that I have seen, such as DeMello, seem to have a 2" receiver incorporated.

Good question and Welcome to ExPo!

Now that I think of it, all the aftermarket rear bumpers I've seen delete the frame mounted rear receiver. In my opinion, a well made and properly braced and welded rear bumper with the receiver incorporated will be equally as strong as OEM - they (Demello and others) just dont "rate" them for towing due to liability concerns.

A good fab shop can build you whatever you're looking for. The only downside to custom pieces is the co$t...

Thanks for the info Dave. Great looking truck too. I've viewed it many times on the Bentup site as well as this forum. Are you on Toyota120.com? I am, under the same name 'Bryota'. - Hey, it was available.... ;-)

I will get some pictures of mine added soon. I will also update my profile signature to call out the mods that I have done.

I had hoped to get to SEMA this year. In fact, my reservations are not canceled yet. Still have flights, rental car and hotel arranged. All from points that I've accumulated from my business travel over the last year. I really hate to cancel because I've been wanting to go for years. However, my son (6) has two soccer games and then there is Halloween - all during the same week. Oh well, there is always next year.

Take care -- BRYOTA (Bryan)

Demello and others ggenerally do not build a bumper to fit the factory hitch because of clearance issues. I'm sure if you contacted the builders directly they could easily fab what you need. I would be surprised however if the factory hitch wold not fit with minor modification like drilling a few holes in the bumper mounting bracket for the bolts to go through.

I am sure any fab shop can make what you want. Most intigrate the receiver for more clearence. Demello, bent-up or whoever else will do whatever you want.

I went through this search last year. It is almost impossible to retain a factory Class III trailer hitch plus have a solid, expedition worthy rear bumper and tire carrier unless it is 100% custom work.

The frame mounts on the hitch are done it a way that interfere with most bolt on bumper applications. In order to have a solid bumper that can stand up to recovery operations, you need to mount it in the same location as those hitch frame mounts. They are in the strongest spot.

I still have a factory hitch and hitch mounts in the garage. I will try and take a pic tomorrow to show what I mean. If you have a stock hitch right now, compare that way it mounts with this Demello mount - same position and they can't co-exist.

I think i would rather just built a new rear bumper then pay $690 for this... You can have a sweet rear bumper for that....If you have metal working skills...it will cost you even less!.....Just my 2 cents...

Here's my built!

I'm with Nullifier......clearance would be an issue!

The issue I see, so far, in the aftermarket bumper/receivers is that they lack the lateral strength and the load distribution ability of the typical receiver hitch.
Now I haven't seen the stock part, so I may be giving it more ability than it actually has but I tend to doubt that.

In the pic above, that little tab under the frame rail? It, along with the vertical plate, wanted to extend fwds 12"-18" to a mounting point and rrwds to a mounting point on the bumper. That would address these concerns.

HIGHLY suggest checking the various off road forums re: Kennesaw.
I've not delt with them personally so I'll leave it at that.

I just did... never heard of them before. They actually have a product at the bottom right of the page: http://www.kenmtn.com/html/multi-carrier.asp

The caption says a 1997 Tacoma, but it looks newer then that. This is new to me and might be a solution!
Guys, do yourselves a favor and just stay the hell away from Kyle & Kennesaw Mountain.

Not only is the workmanship is shoddy, but he is, ahem, "less than ethical".
