New here but this thread did grab my attention due to the fact I have an 05 tacoma. No issues yet.
Question for you cpayne5, What head bolt tool did you need from snap-on? Just trying to be prepared in case I ever have to deal with problem.

Also how are the 4.0 cylinders numbered, 1,2,3 for one bank or 1,3,5?
Thanks, Cam-shaft

Hey cam-shaft, sorry it took so long getting back to you. I've been on vacation.
Here is the tool...
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?store=snapon-store&item_ID=80117&group_ID=20984

I've read where many people use a triple square in place of a bi-hexagon, but it is not something I wanted to chance, so I bought the right tool.

Got back from vacation a few hours ago (990 mile drive from Florida!). Went right out to the 4Runner and took it for a drive - the first since getting everything back together - and it ran great. Granted, it was only a short drive, but everything seemed fine. No lights, funny smells, sounds, etc.

Another cylinder 6 issue?

I have to start by saying I know enough about vehicles to know that I don't know squat about vehicles other than driving them. I'm a little alarmed about the number of threads I've read on here about cylinder 6 problems.

10 days or so ago on a Saturday eve, my '05 4Runner (167,000 mi)started rough like it was missing. Took it to O'Reilly to have it scanned and they said it was a misfire on cylinder 6...probably an ignition coil. Couldn't get it in to the shop until Thursday but O'Reilly said it wouldn't hurt to drive for a few days. Wednesday, dealer near my office (30 miles from home) said the same thing...ignition coil but they had to order it and made appointment for the next Monday. Friday before that, drove 30 miles to a meeting and it started to overheat. Took it in Monday and told them about the overheating. Left it there with them and the next thing I know I'm being told it's a blown head gasket and I need a new engine. Said they knew it by blowing air into the cylinder and it bubbled up in the radiator and also said they had to add 1 gal. of coolant. They didn't take it apart to check if the cylinder was bent/warped/whatever or even to see if the gasket was ruined.

Brought it back to the dealer where I bought it. They tell me they see no evidence of a blown head gasket, the ignition coil isn't bad and that all I needed was new spark plugs because I have the platinum kind that hadn't been changed...ever. Also told me you can't test my engine by blowing air into it to see if it bubbles in the radiator.

PLEASE tell me, is the first dealer lying to me to get to buy a new vehicle or is the second one not checking far enough?

Your HG is toast

Read the above posts. It is your head gasket. Do it now, before you overheat and warp the heads. Code p0306, cyl 6 misfire = toasted head gasket in the 4th gen v6.

One thing that you could do yourself for free is check for the presence of exhaust gasses in the engine coolant. Call a few nearby discount auto parts stores - one may have a "block tester" or "head gasket tester" available to borrow in exchange for a deposit. Here's an instructional video:

Good luck.

HG Problem

I have a 2004 4Runner 4x4 Sport 4.0 V6 128k miles. Just started having same problem I've seen on this and other forums: cyl 6 misfire at startup, CEL and VSC lights on. Changed plugs and noticed cyl 6 plug is white and has damage from getting too hot - when coolant is burning off from head gasket leak. Same cyl 6 misfire resumed at startup shortly after changing plugs. I will be calling Toyota dealer and corporate. To have to replace head gasket at 128k miles and to find out that there are so many others this has happened to is a real problem!

Hi everyone,
Having the same issue with my '05 4runner V6. Mechanics want anywhere from 2400-4000 for the repair. I feel like Toyota ought to be accountable for all these repairs. I have 100,300 miles on the car. KBB value about $12-13,000. Just afraid of future problems even after the gasket repair. Have you guys had any updates from Toyota?

Thanks!

I tried to get some reimbursement. They told me no. When I mentioned the repair was not done by a Toyota dealership, they told me hell no. Like I'm gonna pay Toyota to fix their **** up.
I got a good repair. The financial pain has subsided. The monetary scars have healed.
$3000 is top end for this repair. On a Tacoma, the book calls for dropping the entire front end/suspension all to get at the bottom of the timing chain cover. Not necessary. It can be gotten to without. That's a lot of labor savings. Don't know if this is the case with the 4Runner but FYI.
$40k miles later, I'm good. Just changed the plugs, they look good. Including #6.
