Replace syncros in an FG

Not sure how much better. If they re-engineered them twice, I'm guessing the first try wasn't much better.:)

I decided to call another local Fuso dealer for an estimate after the guy I called with the used transmission told me his syncros were being replaced there. Estimate is $1500-1600 to replace the 4 syncros. If there are any bad gears, it's about $100 per gear. That seems like a reasonable price to me so I think I'm going to have them do it. It's a little further from my house--about an hour, but I'll drive an hour for thousand dollars.

That's still three times more than this guy told you it cost him.
Does that price include the removal of the transmission? If so, I think that $1500 is a fairly reasonable amount.

Yes, it includes removal and reinstallation of the transmission. Clutch is $560 more plus a couple of hours of labor. I'm considering putting a new clutch in it and keeping the old one as a spare.

No matter what the vehicle, I have always replaced the clutch plate when doing work on the gearbox. If the box is out, it's normally done a few miles; it's just logic really...

Might as well re race the transfer too while your at it Kerry....they gotta pull it apart to get the main shaft out anyway....

Depending on how many kms/miles you have done the main transfer case bearings are not worth changing.
I done all the bearings on my trans & g/box in my 94 canter recently. The main shaft bearings in the tranfer are huge very good quality & very expensive $500 AUD. After looking at them they were still in very good condition and in hindsight not needing replacement.
The input & output bearings are worth doing.

The mechanic says he will look at everything while he has it apart and see if it needs anything else besides syncros.
I'm guessing the clutch was replaced in the not too distant past because the engine was replaced before I bought it. It's likely that they installed a new clutch when putting in the new engine. I plan to keep the old clutch as a spare and have them put in a new one.

You obviously carry less weight then we did......

Dropped it off at Mountain Truck and Equipment this morning about 830am. Got a call at 330pm. Transmission is out and disassembled, so my estimate of 12 hours to remove and reinstall is probably pretty close, maybe a little high. Syncros were all worn. 5th gear was also worn so I have to replace that gear--$300 for that gear. Clutch looked original to them and it lasted 190k. New clutch is $590.

By the way, the service manager did talk to me about the syncros that were replaced in the transmission of the guy I talked to on the the phone a few days ago. He said in that particular instance, the grinding was being caused, not so much by bad syncros as by excessive longitudinal movement on the main shaft. Instead of the syncro pushing on and slowing it down, the syncro pushed the whole shaft instead. (if that explanation makes sense?). He said they had to shim the shaft to stop that movement and get the syncros to do their job properly.

Got the truck back today. $29xx. Rebuilt the transmission, replaced the clutch, refaced flywheel, and rear main seal on engine. Transmission needed input shaft/gears and also fifth gear in addition to syncros. Mountain Truck is a great place. Very professional and personable. They gave me the old parts and showed me the problems. Most of the grinding was caused by the fact that the taper on the gears which the syncro grips were worn down so the syncro slid right up to the gear without gripping the gear tightly enough to match speed. Input shaft/gear was about $360. 5th gear $135. Clutch was about $600. Bunch of misc. parts--syncros and seals. Gave me the old clutch to keep as a spare--it is still functional. I also kept the old input shaft to use to align any future clutch. Shifts very smoothly up and down now.
I'd highly recommend Mountain Truck and Equipment. They're a Fuso dealer in additional to selling and working on lots of different kinds of equipment. they had a Sno-Cat in the shop when I got there. They're not afraid of unusual vehicles.
