Jealooooous!!!

Thanks for the tip on the chemical strip. I've been contemplating just taking it down to bare metal before the Durabak to make sure all of the tiny rust spots have been treated, but wasn't sure about the Gone time crunch. Have you considered camping out of your X and using the tent for gear? We've been doing just that for 2 years now and have worked out a really comfortable setup using 2 inch memory foam as a base and topped with a down mattress pad. Both can be rolled up neatly and secured with bungee cords for transport, and we just toss all of our wood, water, and supplies into the tent (except clothes, which stay inside). Quite the cozy set up during inclement weather.

:) Not sure how well the chemical strip will do with rust, but I know it will eat away all exterior coatings. I just used a zinc-based primer to prevent the spread of rust after a quick sand down job. Southern California weather isn't a factor with rust anyways so I'll be good to go until the next coating. Then I'll probably do a complete strip and powdercoat if I'm feeling it. I say if you have the time, go for a complete strip and a correctly done primer/paintjob or powdercoat. It will payback dividends in the long run.

We enjoy sleeping in the tent, but if things get dicey, we'll just consolidate and sleep in the back. Never done that yet since the weather has been quite bearable, minus the cold-weather snow camping we did last weekend in Colorado. We actually pack a thick base pad and several heavy blankets when we tent sleep, so making the switch into the cargo area of the X would simply be putting a few storage containers outside or on the roof. We'll also be switching to more of a light backpacking setup with the right bags and the right pads to minimize the excess we bring out camping. It gets quite roomy with the right setup.

Not sure if I'll be making Gone this year. Maybe next year when things start to settle down and the truck is finished.

Damn... You bought this off Casper/Josh didn't you? I wanted to take that off his hands badly.

Yep, yes I did. I saw the price, and I couldn't pass up a deal like this. Honestly spec-ing a similar setup would have cost easily over $1000. No thanks. But having driven out there to pick it up, I pretty much hit that mark with the week-long trip.

I still can't believe I made the jump. I'm extremely happy with the purchase though. :)

Looks great Richard. I didn't make the meet up as I planned to, so many things came up last minute I didn't even have time to cancel my arrival.

It might help quite a bit if you replaced the hiems with a bushing. Just a thought.

We'll meet up at the next meet if we both make it. :)

I readjusted the heims, added washers to replace the busted spacers and re-tightened the clamp between the two arms. That seemed to help tighten things up a bit all around. I've done some spirited driving and some hard stops and it seems to be good to go. Now all I have to do is get some jerry cans.

Last few major things to do:

- 4 fuel cans
- Yaesu FT-2900 2m Radio with whip and FRS/GMRS 2-way radios
- Some small interior organization : Raingler ceiling net and molle panel on rear hatch

Very curious about this...

Raingler has been working on that for awhile.

Interesting to know that Raingler has been working on it but nothing yet out on the market.

I've been thinking about it and possibly just laser cutting some 1/8" thick Sintra board. Laser cut the slits to weave through as a panel instead of fabric and mounting the board to the inner panel. Heck, I may also mount them on the rear window areas too and wherever is a convenient location for them.

Might do this in conjunction to the glare shields I've been lagging to get to, but other priorities are at hand.

Four 20L jerry cans from DeutscheOptik came in today with extra gaskets and spout.

Yaesu 2M radio with antenna coming next.

Four NATO 20L jerry cans are here. Got 4 new gaskets and a spout as well. From DeutscheOptik. They shipped everything for free for me and it shipped quite quickly.
